I have 3 DSLRs for regular use. I wouldn't call any back-ups, I just keep any cameras I've bought. I have 3 main Pentax DSLRs, K-3 (24MP), K-5 (16MP), and K-20D (14MP); I like using the K-5 best, so when it dies if it does so before I do I plan to replace it with a used K-5 ii S. Of course by then I may be using Fujifilm cameras.
Hmmm, might there be something to what you are implying.
I used to have a Panasonic G2 + G3 + G5. None was a back-up. They were upgrades, still useful to save changing lenses. Eventually I thought it was getting a bit silly, so sold the lot and bought in to the GX series (currently a GX8) and a 12-32 and 35-100. The joy of photography returned with a smaller bag.
Ten years of 2 x Crop and I came to the conclusion that with sufficient mpx the requirement would be wider angle zooms, rather than longer, making up for the reduced FOV.
