I have used SmugMug for a bit over a year to sell some local sports and events photos. I have been successful enough to sign up for another year, but I can't retire on my earnings here. For me, it's just another venue to present my work, and it allows an easy answer to those that ask where to view the shots I take. I have business cards that direct you to my site, I have online advertising, I have cooperative advertising and I advertise in the stadiums of some of the schools I cover. Do as much advertising as you can afford to get the word out. Best of luck.

You say “Neither of us are professionals nor do we seek or do paid shoots“ but you want to sell the occasional photo. Sounds like Art Print territory.
Disclaimer I do not sell photos on SmugMug. I use SmugMug for my Hobby but not the pro version. The pro version is expensive. I have seen many very fine professional web sites on SmugMug. Many professionals are using the site to sell their photography services, i.e., paid shoots.
Have you looked into Fine Art America? From what you describe as your goals, they may be better suited for what you want to do.
