Canon 6d mk2 update firmware ?

I have a Canon 6d mk 2 camera which has never had its firmware updated. Seems to be working fine to me.I'm not sure how to do it or even if it is necessary. How or where can I find out if I need to update the firmware ? Does the Canon site detail these updates and method of carrying out this task? Or is it a case of "If it ain't broke don't fix it"?

The Canon Global website should have all the details. Print them out and read them before beginning. The process itself is usually not difficult.

Yes, all you need to know should be on Canon's Web site. You might call them as well to clarify things since this seems to be totally new to you. Sometimes the updates are not really needed, yet sometimes they are critical.

Read the FW update description (notes) and see if it is useful before deciding whether to install. Often it is something as trivial as adding lens correction for a lens that you don’t own. Also, if you happen to be using Magic Lantern, make sure the update is supported before you update if you want to continue to use ML.

Agreed, although this update is important if you use your camera with WIFI or bluetooth. A good point about ML, but I don't think ML "supports" the 6D mkII.

I would recommend doing this FW update. I have done so for my 80D, but no need for my T3i and T2i which do use ML, but do not appear to be vulnerable to this current issue.

Good points Peter and good to hear from you!

Thanks everyone for the advice. Decided to go ahead from Canon website. Followed clear instructions to the letter and pleased to say everything went smoothly & easily much to my surprise. Camera now updated to latest firmware so whatever it is/was I know I am up to date. Another process learned to add to my limited knowledge. Pat myself on the back !!!

I did this for my 60D. On the verge of pulling my hair out and went as far as calling my neighbour round when it suddenly worked. Never found out what I did that final time but it seems O.K. Don't mind admitting I'm a digital dinosaur with a slight dyslexic issues, so perservere!

What’s wrong with dyslexia ?

It’s an anagram of daily sex !

I wish that's all it was. There's loads more people out there with far more serious cases than me, possibly some on here.
Sometimes, I just wish I could pick up a book and read it. Without forgetting what was on P1 by the time I've reached P5.

Canon does offer free cleaning and checking at camera stores, usually they can do an update firmware.
Unique Photo is having one in September!

Current firmware for the 6D II is 1.0.4. Look in your menu and see what firmware you have. if it is not this version you can update by downloading this firmware file on your SD card, put the card in the camera and go to the firmware update menu. Hit update and the camera will do the rest.
