Hello,
I live in a rented COOP.
I am being harassed by tenants saying that my husband and I are making noise.
I am looking for a small sound recorder I can place in my apartment and keep on all day to record.
Does anyone know of anything?
I don't want to spend to much maybe around $50.00. I have seen a few devices around that price.
Thank you
Get a voice activated one. I've got an Olympus that I paid around $50.00 for at Best Buy. That was a few years ago though. The sound pickup is very good. The Sony models were a lot more expensive, at least at the time, and not noticeably better. Hope this helps.
I don't believe that such a recorder would help you much but if you are going to do it, I would suggest a security camera that has a record over DVD. It records all the time and most are good for over a week full time and when it gets to the end, it just records over what was already there. It would probable exceed you budget but you would get security along with the sound.

Most computers these days have a record function and are set up to run on power as well as battery.
Just recording sound would only say a sound was made and the time but not the loudness. If you set up a loudness (decibel) meter and recorded the readings on a laptop camera you could establish volume of sound.
You might be better served in looking for a device that measures sound intensity. A recorder may not be that useful. I have a small Phillips recorder that works really well, but it does not record intensity.

So what will you prove? Only that during the period you recorded, there were no loud sounds. Says nothing about the timed your neighbors will claim you are raucous. You would be better off having adjacent neighbors substantiate that you are not noisy.
We once lived in an apartment next door to a fruitcake neighbor. One time our cat jumped off the sofa onto the carpet and the lady next door started banging on the wall. "Stop that stamping!!!"

You can have the data time stamped and find out when the offensive noise occurred and clearly show that there was no excessive noise.
If an issue, the data can be used for court.

Absolutely right. A reliable locked in recording of sound levels is critical, as one can turn down volume when recording.
About 60 years back... we had a sound problem. Cops showed up at the door... We were re-roofing my parents home and I had connected my reel to reel to my brothers amps and two 18" Warfdale speakers... The noise complaint came from 2-1/2 blocks away...
