[quote=charlienow]Well. I have reading about the D500 and really have GAS.....

I have both. I had the D7200 set up on a tripod and pre focused on a feeder, when I realized
I needed a second camera hand held. Enter the D500. No regrets !!

Buying photography equipment while under the influence of GAS is usually not a good idea, as it becomes all too tempting to purchase something that you don't really need or won't actually improve your photography.

The problem is, people with GAS often have impaired judgement concerning what they actually need. Imagine if you had bought a D5 instead of the D500. Would you still be thinking you made a wise choice?

If I bought only what I needed I wouldn’t have a camera. As it so happens I have a D500, a D7200, a Panasonic Lumix G9, a Fujifilm S1 Bridge camera, a Fujifilm waterproof point & shoot and an iPhone. I use and enjoy them all. Maybe I have GAS, but if my GAS bothers you I quote Monty Python: “I fart in your general direction”

The 7200 is a fine camera, but the D500 is a great camera. The 500 is the best low light camera ever made. Yes you will be able to take better pictures with the D500. I have had my D500 for two months now and I am taking better pictures now. This camera makes me want to go out and take pictures every day. The D500 has reinvigorated my passion for photography. If you want this camera, GET IT. You will not regret it.

The D500 is an excellent low light camera but it is definitely not the best low light camera ever made. Like several other cameras it has a normal ISO range of 100 to 51200. Then there's the expanded range which is realistically just another form of advertising because pretty much anything shot at over 51200 is going to be quite grainy and anything shot toward the high end is totally unusable. What makes a great low light camera is the cameras ability to produce usable images at high ISO'S and being the D500 is an APS-C sensor camera, it would have a difficult time competing with full frame cameras made by Canon and Nikon and Sony, especially Sony, just to name a few.

I recently had the same decision to make when upgrading from a
D 7000. I was told to look closely at photographs from the D7200 and the D500. I looked at hundreds of photos and could not distinguish between the two. I bought the D7200.

But IBIS is probably not a factor in shooting BIF and action...

Actually the Z6 body is $300 more. Maybe not a big deal, but then you would also need to by a Z lens or spend another $250 for the FTZ adapter to use you’re existing lenses. And if those lenses are DX then you would need to use the Z6 in crop mode. The big advantages of the D500 over the D7200 (I have both) are low light performance and focusing speed. If you shoot wildlife it’s a game changer. The Z6 should be great in low light, but not even close on focusing speed. The Z6 has a slightly faster frame rate, but it’s easy to overload the buffer, 35 raw images as opposed to the D500’s 200. The one real advantage of the Z6 is the IBIS. I have it on my Panasonic G9 and it’s amazing how slow I cab handhold.

The buffer on the D500 is incredible, holds more images than you'll likely take so you can shoot fast without worry. The autofocus is good. I use my D500 for birds and other action shots. I use my Z7 for landscapes and non-moving objects.

Well. I have reading about the D500 and really have GAS. Currently have an awesome d7200 and do love it. I am wondering if the are any advantages I would get with the D500. Would I get sharper photos. Would I get better low light photos. Will the high iso photos be better.

The high ISO photos will be better. When I do get noise it's much more pleasing, smoother, from what I read it's something to do with pixel density and the xpeed5. I have a D7200 and D7500, I don't know if the D500, being a pro camera can dissipate the heat better or the same.
