I had been watching the remains of 3 old tobacco barns in S. Windsor, CT for a long time. They are (were) on land in that is now a town center style shopping center, and I knew their days were numbered. The barns were extremely overgrown and hard to see, so I was waiting until late fall or winter when some of the growth would be barren. Well, I went by last Friday and two of the barns were gone - victims of clearing the land for a new Costco. The best of the barns was still standing, but the land was being cleared and the overgrowth covering it had been cleared. It was obvious that it was being prepared for removal, so I decided to come back late that afternoon to photograph it. I came back at about 4 PM and was surveying it, waiting for the sun to get a little lower when a fellow in a construction vest and helmet came out with danger signs and a roll of day glow orange tape to circle the barn with. It turns out that they would be taking the barn down soon, but the roof was covered with deteriorating asbestos and they had to fence the barn off, do abatement work on the asbestos and then take the barn to the ground. I talked the fellow into giving me 20 minutes to photograph the barn and, thankfully, he was considerate about it. So, here are the last know photos of this great old barn.

Thanks. I had planned to shoot with a tripod, but with the guy standing behind me, late on a Friday afternoon, I didn't have time to set up the way I wanted to.

Thanks for bringing these images to us. Some of my early ancestors were from the Windsor area having been part of the Great Migration in the early 1630's and then part of the movement into the Connecticut river valley in the 1630's. Some of the names were Moore (who were from Poquonock), Griswold, Phelps, Wadsworth, Gaylord, and many more. I would like to get back sometime and visit my original home stomping grounds.
