I keep getting an ad here for "Military Grade Camera Straps." I wonder if they really are military grade. I've seen that tag applied to almost everything. There was a product advertised that way recently, and a review mentioned that there is no military spec for that item. Funny.

Time was when "Military Grade" would usually make one think 'lowest bidder.'

I recently ordered a, so called, military grade watch. Total scam.

Bob, it would be interesting to provide a bit more detail regarding why you consider it a "total scam". Perhaps include some photographs to enhance your explanation.

No weapons. Haven't you seen any James Bond movies?

It is a braided parachute cord with clips and lobster clasps. Big deal. I'm not trusting my "baby" with something that looks flimsy. I'm afraid that if I sneezer on tibia will fall apart vIf my camera were damaged while it is dangling, who do I get to pay for the repair? Even my dog thinks it's a waste of money. I have the proprietary strap which isn't so bad. I also have a wrist strap that is much more substantial comfortable and wider.

Usually, there is no mention of which military.

I wonder if those *military grade* coffee makers are still available. Those coffee makers that can survive a crash landing and still brew the coffee.

At one time, it could be just one small screw with military grade designation that would qualify the entire product as "military grade". "A tank can run over it and it (the screw) will still work!"

The point is that any and all claims can be made for any product. In photography there are myriad of examples of such product claims. Even by reputable companies.

Caveat emptor! <- True military grade motto.

Its like "Military Grade" Ford aluminum pickups.

Would you REALLY want an aluminum vehicle in battle???? Hell NO! That's exactly why the military doesn't have any aluminum bodied vehicles anymore.

In the Navy "military grade" just meant another layer of paint and shiny brass.

Wasn't that a big problem for the English ships in the Falklands war?

Not that I recall. The Brits lost one ship there, the Sheffield I think, it was sunk by a French Exocet missile fired from a plane. The Brits were totally caught unprepared for the attack. Aluminum is never used on ships as it oxidizes rediculousy fast in salt water exposure.

If you want a top grade strap try Peak Design. I have one on every one of my cameras - they are comfortable and secure. I think the term "military grade" is used as a marketing gimmick.
