It takes a strong person to go above and beyond their pain they are feeling to give everything they have to another , especially their own child . This child is very lucky to have a mother like this . I wish her and her baby all the strength they both will need to get through these hard times , Love and Prayers for all .Tommy

The future does not look that good for this poor baby. The woman featured here is my son's girlfriend and she is holding their newborn baby girl. She was born at the end of April. Just 3 days after her birth, this baby had to undergo open heart surgery that lasted over 6 hours. Something failed to close. It so happened that the surgery would also be on the mother's 19th birthday. The child spent her first month of life at Children's Mercy hospital in Kansas City and has had to go back several times since.

Just on Friday, mom was informed that this poor child has congestive heart failure. She's still hanging tough, though. Mom is also just as incredible! At such a young age, she is so focused on caring for her daughter, to say that the mother "instinct" thing has kicked in, is a gross understatement. She has listened, she has read, and she had to learn instantaneously as to what to do at any given moment. And she does it tirelessly. The fatigue of it all does show, unfortunately.

A life, any life, is worthy even if it is measured in seconds. It is the recognition and acceptance that qualifies it as a success. And you have captured in images those very moments. Keep and share. Perhaps with years to come.

Not too long in the past, your grandchild would have died at birth were it not for the skills of the doctors and attendant medics. Remember to thank them, regardless of what occurs going forward.

Balloon angioplasty which is typically done in a "cath lab" is considered one of the safest alternatives to improve blood flow... I have several colleagues (nurses) who work in the OR and Cath Labs and rest assured they are always at the very top of their game... My very best wishes for a wonderfully positive outcome here... I'm absolutely certain that the intense love this child is receiving may be the finest healing power available...

btw, after having my mitral valve repaired I was in a challenging situation (long runs of PVC's)... was scheduled into the Cath Lab for an ablation however at the very last minute (without any intervention) my EKG returned to normal sinus rhythm... that was nearly sixteen years ago and I've remained in sinus rhythm ever since... the body certainly has a wonderful way of repairing itself...

I trust that this little girl has much success with her present condition... If she does have another procedure please realize that those who work in the neonatal ICU (both doctors and nurses) are among the most dedicated medical professionals. Only the best of the best are selected...

Hope springs eternal... thus here's hoping her CHF symptoms subside...
Thank you for sharing these poignant images tainkc...

Well, who knows? We do learn a little bit more of what we can do about things when situations like this arise. I bet that only 20 years ago, the odds of this baby making it this far, were far less. The doctors are already planning in great detail as to what to do about her heart. She will need another operation. They are hoping that inserting a balloon will do the trick in order to make a rather small opening larger for better blood flow. Less invasive and safer.

My wife is a retired OR Tech, then lab RN, then Surgical RN and at the end OR Charge Nurse. She saw a lot of progress during her career. They used to send someone to relieve her in the OR to go to another OR when they had a baby because she was the best they had at inserting IVs etc in the tiny ones. Some of the doctors and nurses didn't even like to do that, so "Send for Debra". A couple of times on her day off they called her because a baby was admitted and needed a procedure immediately.

From your images and text the one thing I can say for certain: No matter what the outcome that little one has an abundance of love and care!

You have captured beautiful moments of the mother and her baby. Emotion flows through these in many ways. Praying for this baby girl. We are limited in what we can do, caring and praying is what I can do.

my prayers for this beautiful little child and her family. Girls are very tough little babies and fighters, so there is always that hope. take care and the power of prayer is amazing, so never loose hope and keep the faith always.

Thank you, Tommy! It is amazing what people can be capable of under this kind of stress. I just saw the mother last night. The baby was not with her, she was with her mother (grandma). I asked about the baby and she said that the baby was doing fine; that she felt that both were strong enough so that mommy could take a little break. Good for her. This kid is sharp!
