New HP Envy 17 laptop. Was using it and went to shut it off. Screen went black but power button stays lit. Holding power button down does not do anything. Unable to restart. Screen stays black. Tried plugging charger in to see if that did anything. Nope. Google search suggesting removal of battery not helpful. I cannot find an accessible battery compartment. I am going to let the battery run down and see if a restart works when plugged in. Has anyone encountered this or know why it happens? Could it be in the process of updating? I will go back to vendor and have it looked at but I was wondering if this was a known issue or if it was preventable. Thanks, YNY.
Need more info. Did you use Shut Down from the Start button options? Did you try moving the mouse or trackpad? (May have gone into Sleep mode.) How did you shut it off?

I should probably make sure I do not have both on. YNY.
Try, Press Ctrl, alt, and delete buttons at the same time, hold for 10 sec. This worked for me a few years back.

The paperwork that came with the computer will show how to remove/change the battery.
If not, for help, take back to where you bought it. Take notes.
I wasn't going to say anything, but I haven't made anyone mad yet today, so - - - - - - - - buy an MSI or Asus laptop next time.
I bought an ASUS laptop 3 or 4 years ago. It was slower than a snail climbing uphill. The next day, I returned it and ordered a Dell. The Dell works perfectly.

I have an HP Pavillion, few years old and I have that problem. My "solution" is, using the screen power button , restart and then after reboot turn off. Been like that for a long while, and HP won't even talk to me with out buckets of cash up front. It also takes about 15 minutes to completely boot, meaning to get all drivers etc. loaded.
HP, after Carly Fiorina did her thing, is not the company it was, customer service sucks, product quality is very hit and miss, you might get a good one then you have a good machine , chances seem good you'll get a slowly dying lemon. Printers I have found are similar, I have a wireless HP printer that is always dropping connection, the only devices in the house that do that are HP.
I've given up on HP and just got a new Dell, should arrive by the end of the month.

I had that problem a couple months ago, and it turned out that I had interrupted an update being installed. It took a day and a half but I was finally able to restart it. It to is an HP Envy. Hope this helps.

It may have been something similar. I left it as it was and went out for dinner. A few hours later I found it had sorted itself out. Works fine now. Thanks to all who replied. YNY.
