Just had someone comment that a picture I had taken "looked just like a painting you must have a really good camera" do I just reply with a thank you? What would you say?

I would politely explain how I took the photograph and processed it mentioning the skills required to do it and then say; "I feel like I could have done this with any camera." Then thank them for their interest in your image.

I think I would say “Thanks” (at least it was a compliment). I might then reply that I know how to use the camera as well.

Thank you. I didn't know what to say, I do feel it was intended as a compliment :)

Tell them how you feel.

Oh, it was intended as a compliment.
But many people don't know about composition and exposure, so they think better cameras take better pictures.

I simply reply "Thank you, it does well for me.".
(They're not looking for a lesson in photography.)

I once read that a famous photographer dined at a famous restaurant. When the maitre d' said something like, "I love your photos--you must have a really good camera," the photographer replied, "I loved your food--you must have a really good oven." It's a rough translation. They were trying to compliment you in an ignorant way.

Don't be too upset. I'm sure you are a good photographer taking photos WITH good equipment. For somebody, like the individual giving the compliment, who is probably used to taking photos with lesser equipment and ending up with less desirable results, he recognized both the better equipment AND your skill.

Besides, just let it roll off. YOU know why your photos are good. Just say "thanks" and leave it at that.

Yes!

Whether or not they said 'good camera', they were still complimenting you and your result.

I would say “thank you”.

It is a compliment. Why do you ask what to say? Are you offended by the fact that your viewers do not have a deep understanding of the art and craft of photography? If so I suggest another hobby might be more fulfilling.

Otherwise I suggest you respond as you would to any compliment.

I do not mean that to sound harsh. Just saying...

I think that the best way is just to politely acknowledge the compliment--which is exactly what it is.

If you know the person well or if it is appropriate in this particular situation, you might add that you indeed have decent photographic equipment, but that skill is equally important to take a good photograph.
