Interesting - the approach on San Francisco Bay seems to be to remove the middle sections and leave (Dumbarton) or modify (Oakland) the remaining ends for fishing or observation. Eliminates or reduces maintenance issues.
There is also an abandoned, deteriorating railroad bridge with a swing section permanently open. Some talk rebuilding.
