How do Hoggers clear and format a memory card outside the camera?

Never chance it. Even if doing it in the computer was safe, in camera is easier.

After I transfer all the files to my hard drive, I do a simple CTRL-A and delete, then put it back in the camera. I don't usually format unless it's a new card.

I don’t format outside of the camera. I have always formatted memory cards in the camera where am using them. The act of formatting, deletes the existing files. If I use the card in a different camera, even a camera from the same manufacturer, I always format the card in the new camera. That may be too “belt and suspenders” for some of you folks, but I have not experienced memory card problems. Formatting takes me a couple of minutes max.

I put it in the computer and use Windows Explorer to copy the files to the computer. Once Carbonite backs them up, I delete the images on the card, then put the card back in the camera.
Been doing that for ten years with absolutely no problems.

My cards have only been formatted once, initially when I put them in the camera.

That sounds very scary. I have always been taught and read that you should format before each time you put an empty card in the camera, as there are specific things that only the camera can do.

Formatting in a computer is said to produce different results that in camera that may also render the card useless.

Oh, and here's one that seems to have passed on: Don't delete on the street.

Yes, formatting in the camera on first use is very important. Formatting basically sets the storage medium to a file system the camera can "communicate" with.

After you format in camera, if your computer can read the data without any issues, then the computer and camera are basically talking the same file system language. The computer doesn't "re-format" the storage device to retrieve files.

While formatting, say an SD card, multiple times isn't a bad thing, it does tend to reduce the amount of writes you can make to that media. Now, with today's technology, the theoretical re-write limits are so high we rarely see the end-of-life of that device, it is possible.

Again, formatting every time isn't wrong by any standard. It is just not necessary unless the camera can't read the file structure.

I've never reached the max write level, so I don't worry about excessive formatting. And since I own several cameras from different manufacturers, I feel the need more than those of you with just one camera camera brand.

I definitely agree about formatting in the camera as the camera may want specific folders to exist. For that reason I don't format the cards in a computer, why do it twice?

Not scary at all, it's just memory, just like a USB stick, nobody worries about them. (I was a Component Test Engineer in Supplier Quality Assurance for over 25 years and memory was one of the things I worked with.)
Yep, there are plenty of people that believe that, vehemently, but unnecessarily. Integrated circuit memory is not like a disk where it performs faster if the files are contiguous as opposed to being in pieces in different locations on a disk. Like I said earlier, ten years of deleting on a computer with nary a single problem, with over half a dozen cards (SD and Memory Stick). If it was a real no-no and there was a problem in doing so, I would have expected at least ONE hiccup in ten years.

Do any card manufacturers say "Don't delete files via the computer."? No. Are any of the people who say "Don't delete on the computer." electronic engineers? I'm guessing no.
I'm more concerned with static electricity while handling them, especially when the weather is dry.
But, y'all can believe what you want to believe. I believe the camera manufacturers suggest formatting cards before use (do they all say "each use"?) to help reduce possible user problem calls.

I delete in camera also, never had a problem with that either. Passed on? Finally!

Do what you feel comfortable with. I do.

Why would you want to?

Because.....everyone has a process, and there are many ways to achieve the same result?

I think it's asking for trouble. As others have already said - format the card in camera - no other way.
