Funny thing about color blindness. A master environmental/portrait photographer Joel Grimes is color blind and it hasn't stopped him from making a good living with international recognition. Maybe this is an illustration of where one sets their own limitation and the inadequacies or handicaps aren't really a ruling factor in life if you want something bad enough.

I'm horribly color blind for the record.

Is it color blind or an untrained eye?
I am not color blind, yet I do not see some of the color the nuances that some of my colleagues can until they show me.

There are different degrees of color blindness. And people who are exceptionally good at distinguishing color tones from one another did not necessarily go through some kind of color-recognition training program.

Part of the interview process for a large commercial printer involved color and contrast tests. I passed and ended up working there for 28 years.

Our development team did have a color blind programmer. He got hired for his talent. He would have to call one of us over to help him test his programs.

Here's a question that I always wonder about every time the subject of colorblindness arises (not very often, I must admit): If a person is born colorblind, which I assume is the way it usually works, how does that person know they are colorblind? If they have never seen colors in any other way then they have no reference to how others see those colors. Does it manifest itself as a difficulty distinguishing between certain colors, such as on DMV eye tests? If someone were never tested would they ever know? Just curious.

There are different types of color blindness. My understanding is the most common type is the inability to distinguish red and green, the second most common is yellow-blue. Most of the time it's caught in early childhood and there is no cure. More common in men than women. You can get a drivers license by knowing if the top light is lit or bottom light is lit.

I only found out I was partially color blind when I joined the Air NG and failed the color vision test.
I had a pretty good idea about it when at a family patio dinner with steak I asked why my medium-rare cut was as green as the grass.

Just a thought. Is a person with red/green color blindness allowed to drive?

Another question: Do the glasses that were developed a few years ago to correct colorblindness really work?
Green steak? Are you sure it was your vision? Some of those family get-together dinners involve alcohol!

I never heard of such glasses. Knowing how the eye perceives color I don't see how glasses could help.

The family dinner was only the first time. For a number of years I knew my steak was as-ordered by the green color. That eventually self-corrected, but I still fail the test.

The glasses have been out for some time now. Ray-Ban is one of the manufacturers. I believe there are different ones depending on the type of colorblindness. I understand that they work very well in many cases but I have never conversed with anyone who has actually used them.

Most people are red green color blind. In Britain the electric cables were ground(earth) was green. Live wire was red. I had to ask my wife if I was working on anything to get it right. The colors were for new equipment by EU in 2004. Ground changed to yellow live red and neutral black.3
