In the Midwest, it was the old time Watkin's Petro Carbo for drawing out slivers, and it is still available.

A couple of days ago, I got a splinter under the nail of my pinky. Actually, I didn't realize it was a splinter. I just thought that something poked me under the nail. I tried several techniques to remove it, but nothing worked. Then I remembered that when I was a kid, we always had something called drawing salve. I went to the drug store and bought a tube of it under its modern name - ichthammol. I put it on my finger, covered it with a couple of band-aids, and waited a day.

My finger stopped hurting shortly after applying it. I removed the band-aids just now, and was able to pull the splinter out with a pair of tweezers. There was barely any wood sticking out from under the nail, but it came out easily, and it didn't hurt at all.

I prefer to just leave the offending splinter in under my fingernail or a few days. When it gets infected and pussy I squeeze it hard in a vise which causes the pus and splinter to come out. Feels much better afterward.

The Amish around here have their own formula for Drawing Salve. Nasty ingredients which includes horse
manure. LOL

Kinda like banging your head against the wall for a few minutes. Hurts like hell for a while but feels sooooooooo good when you stop😊

Does the drawing salve actually cause the skin/flesh to push the splinter out of the skin, allowing one to then get a grip on it to pull it out?

Great hint Jerry--I can't remember how many times I've been plagued by slivers that I couldn't reach. I'm going to get some ichthammol and add it to my first aid kit.

Back in the 60’s I managed to break a piece of glass, of which a small shard went into my right index finger, in them days I was undertaking a lot of repairs jobs on vehicles, and every time I tightened a not or bolt, wowwwweee (pain) so I went to the hospital, X-RAY, nothing there sir (bs) I can’t remember now but it must have 30 or 40 years later a small whitehead appears on my finger (I don’t mind a bit of pain) so I squeeze the top of my finger and wala out comes the sliver of glass, about 2mm in diameter and 7 or 8mm long, I think there might still be a tiny piece in there, BUT, I’m old enough now to get others to do that sort of work for me, if nothing else a lesson learned

Jerry that splinter looks quite a size compared with the tweezers.

I found in the many years I have been here that an easy way to remove splinters ( not sure about under nails) is to coat the area with wood glue. Wait til it dries good, then peel off the glue, which will also pull out the splinter.

Nice work Jerry.....splinters can really fester and become awful at times.
