I bought Nikon EN-EL15A on Ebay for my Nikon D500

It had the hologram and in original looking Nikon box. Vendor was Duncan Camera in Arcadia, CA and advertised as New Original Genuine OEM Nikon EN-EL15A. I decided I would not take a chance of battery damaging my D500 and is in route being returned to Duncan Camera now. Then ordered another battery from B&H. Battery cost $40 and B&H battery $19 more. Has anyone had any experience with Duncan Camera? How could this battery look so real at a low price? Thanks in advance for your opinions, good or bad.

How do you know it wasn't a genuine Nikon battery. Just asking.

I really don't. Maybe I just panicked. But how could they sell so much cheaper?

The Chinese counterfeit batteries look VERY real and often close to indistinguishable from genuine products, but there are clues if you know what to look for.
Your FIRST clue is for any of them selling for less than market price, same as grey markey cameras and lenses. Retail prices are fixed by the manufacturers. Less than retail or factory promo pricing ALWAYS means counterfeit. (Unless a store is closing down and selling remaining stock at or below cost to move it out.)

Very convincing counterfeit batteries and accessories have been a problem for several years, although I haven't been aware of any specific problems around the
EN-EL15/a/b batteries. Here is a link to Nikon Worldwide's article on the subject:

https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/ni/NI_article?articleNo=000004702&configured=1&lang=en_US

Note that there does not appear to be a prohibition against dealers selling batteries and accessories for less than the suggested price. One of my local stores frequently has them on sale. Another sells them for $10 less than suggested all the time.

Thanks for the replys, they were a lot of help. Danny Oliver
Makes me feel better and should not have bought a cheaper battery on Ebay in 1st place. My B&H battery delivering tomorrow.

At the risk of starting a "fire", I use aftermarket in DF, D810, D750, D7200 - the latter 3 all take the 15 - and have done so for years. Most often Wasabi. Have found Wasabi to be just as good, and their charger kits smaller, better and more capable than OEM. I understand there may be differences in requirements for the D 500 and D 850.

I believe the battery you got was just what you paid for, a genuine Nikon battery. It is a now discontinued battery according to B&H and their closeout price was $39.

The new EN-EL15B is $59

The only difference between the A & B is that the B can be charged in the Z camera bodies with the appropriate charger.

I believe you have to use EN-EL15a batteries, as opposed to non “a” ones; have never seen any generic “a” batteries, although I haven’t looked in perhaps a rear or more

Seriously, Dude. The D500 is currently selling for $1500.00. The battery for it new is under $60.00. I would never risk my camera on a possible knock-off battery when the real McCoy is so inexpensive.
