Which of these two do you prefer? Why? Thanks.

the first. the second is much to 'busy' with background clutter, makes it harder to see the bird clearly. i'd also brighten up the first one a bit... it's pretty dark...

Exactly my thoughts - on both.

Thank you all for your opinions. It's good to get feedback now and then.

I LIKE THE FIRST SHOT, THE SECOND SHOT IS TO BUSY FOR ME MAYBE IF THE BACK GROUND WAS MORE OUT OF FOCUS IT WOULD BE MORE PLEASING TO MY EYES.

The first is better but alittle dark. These birds have beautiful colors and the opinions may have been different if the pictures were in color. Good work.

The background of the first photo is nicely out of focus. It's also considerably darker than the heron's head. Both serve to separate the bird from the background, which is of course desirable. The background in the second photo would be improved if it were more blurred also, but that may not have been possible under the conditions the photo was taken (i.e. if background was close behind the bird.) The second photo might also benefit from cropping the top and bottom a good bit. Pretty bird pics, and dramatic in B and W. (BTW, if you have access to Photoshop, you might want to get rid of that lone twig sticking up behind the first bird.)

Jay: They are both great photo's of a bird you can't get close to. I prefer the 2nd shot, alot more detail of the bird. Also I would crop out the out of focus area on the bottom of the photo. It would make it a stronger image. I don't like the twig coming out of the back of the first bird, but that is easily removed. You have done a great job with a bird that is hard to photograph.

I'm going to be the odd man out - I like the second photo better - much more interesting! I love the feather detail, and although the background is 'busy', the shapes in the background are similiar to the shapes of the feathers, making it intriging to examine and deciper. Although the first photo is good, I spent a lot more time looking at the second photo. It also reminds me of a stereogram or 'stareo' as some call them.
