Slightly off topic, but related to your Ogden Nash quote,
besides his famous "I scream, you scream, we all scream for Ice Cream."
- my favorite Nash poem is:
"Incompatibility is the spice of married life,
especially if he has income
and she has patability."

All you have to do is remember he got it wrong.
Maggots are still being used in the debridement of dead tissue in wounds.
I don't think they have a "purpose", any more than us humans have a "purpose" to exist. They, like us, just happen to fit into a particular evolutionary niche.
