I can't help with the lens decision, but I have taken that trip, and if you are going to put money into anything, get a longer lens or one with more zoom. You'll want it for whales and birds, other than penguins, which will be very close to you.

As to someone's warning about temperatures, when I was there, the temp never got below 25 F. You will be there in summer!

Thanks again for the advice. I will probably be taking a longer lens (50-500) and/or borrowing a 150-600 from the B&H Equipment locker on board the Nat Geo Explorer. Did your expedition have a B&H Equipment locker available and how did it work out? It seems to be mostly Canon, but there are a few Nikon items listed.

Will i need a polarizing filter? Will Auto White balance be OK, or will I have to change that setting?

I did that same trip in January 2018. It was the best trip my wife and I had ever been on. The attached penguin picture was taken with my 70-300. The orca was from the ship with a Tamron 150-600. There were many passengers with long lenses and monopods, no tripods, on deck. The penguiun picture was taken on shore. I also used my 24-105, but the most pictures were taken with the 70-300. Weather never got below 28. The Drake can be rough so take anti motion meds along though ships doc will have them as well. If you have any questions feel free to PM me

Thanks again for the advice and great pictures. I plan to leave my tripod home and just use a monopod or bean bag. Did your expedition have a B&H Equipment locker available and how did it work out? It seems to be mostly Canon, but there are a few Nikon items listed.

As you stated, mostly Canon equipment in the B&H locker, and it is available on a first come, first served basis so you cannot count on getting the lens you want when you want it. Polarizer is nice and auto white balance was fine. When on the snow, you will want to go +1 on your exposure compensation. The ships photographer will go over all the details. I took my Tamron 150-600 with monopod for onboard for whales and birds.

There was a B&H locker, but I didn't use it.

Polarizing filter could be useful as reflection from ice and water can frequently be polarized.

I used auto WB throughout.

As someone else mentioned, you will have several expert photographers with you. Use them for avice, insights and critiques of your photos.

Take knee pads. The can be very useful for taking shots when kneeling or prone on ice/snow, or in penguin poop.
