Surely I am not the only one in the dark!
What is “Tap-In” ? Have seen a couple of posts recently in reference to and I haven’t a clue about what is being discussed! Thank you in advance for advancing my education again.

Yeah, I saw that too. But, since I don't use lenses by the referenced lens manufacturer, I didn't think I needed to know that tidbit of information.

I wonder if this is a reference to Tamron and Sigma's "tap in console" (hardware) that is used to calibrate their lenses to your camera for perfectly focused results? This product can be purchased from B&H and Adorama and other photography stores. I have a Tamron Tap in Console but have never had to use it so it sits in the original box just in case.

Yes, it is. I think the tap-in refers to ability of the unit to "tap-in" to the lenses firmware card and make changes such as firmware updates, focus fine tuning, etc.
The Tamron version is available for Canon, Nikon and Sony A-mount sens mounts.
Here is a good explanation of the capabilities: https://www.tamron.co.jp/en/lineup/tapin/

Just wondering if you need the console just to update the firmware?

The Tap-In is the Tamron hardware. Sigma's is called the USB Dock. They do more than calibrate lenses. They update firmware and can make other adjustments such as focus speed and focus priority. Depending on the lens, they can program customization switches for focus limiting.
