I have a Canon 5d mk11 and a 100-400 f4 zoom lense. Does anyone have any experience with the canon 2x or 1.4 teleconverters? They are a little pricey and do they work? How do they effect the lens speed and depth of field. Any comments would be helpful

I will only go with what I have learned here & it seems to be quite true.
make sure you get a "Matched" teleconverter to that lens. I have just put into use a Canon F! film SLR that was given me by a friend - the is a 70- 170 with a matched 2X and I can tell you it is super clear at all ranges.
My 1.9X for my bridge camera is not too sharp - don't use it at all- money wasted.

The Canon TC I'll work but you lose auto focus. I own the 1.4 TC and the 100-400 canon. They don't produce very good images, though.

Go to the Canon website and click on the either extender from the lens selection area. It gives a compatibility chart for all of the Canon lenses. It appears to be compatible and will autofocus. Gary

Don't believe it! As I stated before, I have the 1.4 TC II and they give you the exact same chart. That chart only tells you which lenses it will mount on, not whether it will AF with it .

I have the 70-200 and the 1.4, not an issue and images are sharp. I also have the 400 f5.6 and have to manual focus with it. Have you tried spot focus with it, some of the other modes do not autofocus. Gary

Here is a link to canon's professional network that will explain which cameras and lenses will AF with Tele-converters. There are some 1D cameras that will work with the center point AF with lenses that are f/8 with the TC attached.

This is a valuable link to anyone who want detailed info on how the Canon cameras and lenses work.

Thanks for all your responses
I am going on a grizzly shoot off Vancouver Island in two weeks and I think I'll be good with the 100-400 zoom as is.

I hope that you will be carrying a .357 or a .44, just in case things get up-close and personal.

I tried a 1.4 ll with my 100~400mm and it will not work, Henrys took it back no charge. Oh! I wouldn't take a 357 or a 44mag they'll toss you in jail. The people running those trips are very good and have lots of bear spray. Have fun and the 100~400 will be great...

I thought the same thing, I have a 357 and a 40 calibre, however they get a bit edgy if you take them with you anywhere in Canada they prefer to arm the animals than the photographers here. Fortunately the bears are usually more afraid of the people than vise versa.

gwong1 is talking about the 1.4x III. Not the II.

actually they have it set up so that you have to hire a guide if you want protection from wildlife.
