Hi,
I took this picture in 2014 during a day trip to Moc Hoa province, which has been forgotten in my folder, and I want to share it here.
The river in the picture is Song Vam Co Dong (part of Dong Nai river that originates in VN Central Highlands region). Dong Nai river also flows through Bien Hoa (U.S. base Long Binh) as some of you would know.
The picture conveys a deep influence of Confucian ethics in Vietnamese culture.
Hope you enjoy!
I do enjoy this. Confucian understanding is not a strong influence in Western thought. As the world community communicates more and more, it would be interesting to be alive in, say, 500 years, to see how the various thought systems have been picked over for those elements that work best.

Saigon ~ Beautiful photograph. For me it conjures up a meditation on what's really important. Thank you for digging out this treasure. Would love to see more.
Perfect composition, great subject, B&W is the perfect medium. In all a perfect shot that I would frame and hang.
Elegant !!! ? Confucian or Budhism . Thank you for sharing. Shang

I can't read anything other than someone in a boat. I don't see any mediative or deep philosophical influence.

This is the problem with visual art. Some see the story only or mainly. The researcher Viktor Lowenfeld termed them "Visual." Others see the shapes, colors, tones, relationships and composition mainly. Lowenfeld termed them "Haptic." (They appreciate the visuals like most of us can appreciate music with no words.) Reaching both types is a problem.

I was in a combat photo squadron with the Air Force. Nice to see a calm, serene, photo. The images from our comdoc (combat documentation) guys in 1969-70 were not so!

"Visual art"? I still see a picture, just a picture. Have a nice day.

Hi Collhar,
I grew up during VN war, so I feel deeply about the suffering on both sides. Over 2 millions died during 10 years war combined on both sides and most of the war widows had not remarried (confucian ethic), they just did the best they can and raised their kids by themselves.
If you zoom in close enough you could see the lady rowing the boat with a small oar. She probably went to a grocery market (or stand) some where on the river, and the market is about 1/2 or 1 hour rowing on a daily basis. That is the way of life there and it not easy for certain classes of Vietnamese in a smaller village or a remote region.
I had two brothers who were in South VN army so I could fell the suffering in silence of my mom every time one of my brother jumped behind the enemy line to collect the intel.
Hope that would help!
Thx

So, you are obviously "Visual" rather than "Haptic." No problem. I would prefer to discuss this, rather than respond to what appears hostile remarks.
In teaching, I told students that they were probably somewhere along a spectrum, that they shouldn't expect to move much, but it would be a good idea to try to catch some of what was going on at the other end. Especially try if you want to succeed in the visual arts field, which is strongly haptic.
