I am curious if anyone knows the algorithm for photo file names assigned by some cameras.
e.g 603552_396607490394742_544007079_n.jpg
I find nothing in that sequence of numbers which is date, time or photographically relevant.
Dang, that's huge!
A camera did that?
I re-number all my photos by date.
You didn't ask but I'm offering for those who are interested:
I use ACDSee Pro 5 to do all this.
Today, I'm shooting a tailgate party at the Royals baseball game.
Folder would be named something like 120828 Royals Tailgate
Images inside would be numbered 120828_###
Any extra info like names, etc goes in the metadata under keywords.
Your file naming convention is essentially the same as mine. Brilliant minds...

Thanks for that pearl. I am interested to know 1) do the keywords remain with the photo eg if you copy it to another computer. 2) can you search for keywords in metadata? 3) how do you add them? Thanks Anthony

1) Yes, they stay with the metadata, unless you do a "save for web"
2) that's how I do searches- keywords or folder names
3) Various ways- in ACDSee, I just type it in the IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) section under keywords- individually or the whole folder as a batch.
Bridge works in a similar way.
There a several hogs on this site who use a similar system.

This sequence looks like someone set up their own naming system, either AFTER downloading, or DURING the download process. Most cameras will have some sort of sequential system which may or may not include a date indication.

What was someone thinking when they came up with that? I could understand if this was a naming system used by a business to specify department, date, shift, topic, etc. Looks like nonsense to me.

Actually looks like some of the numbering etc that gets added when uploading to a photo site like this on!! The original name plus something to keep from duplicating on the site! Definitely not very explanatory to ANYONE except the creator!!

I did a bit of poking around on Google, and it appears this may be a photo from a Facebook page. Couldn't track it beyond that because I will not have anything to do with Facebook.

One of the biggest security leaks that has ever existed, and they themselves STEAL so much from their subscribers in the way of photo copyrights, usage, etc........
