You might try softer light in a "light box" to get rid of the shadows and allow the colors and textures to be shown to greater advantage. And as stated a darker background color will cut down on the contrast.

Thank you for the advice. I joined a mineralogy group that is very particular about how you take your pictures of agates and other minerals. They say "Make sure it is quality, use a white or tan background (
), take them outdoors direct sunlight".... I do have a decent lighting system....I think I will experiment at first with my home made light box and I also have two smaller lights that simulate sunrise or sunset light that work pretty good. I will give you an example of one of the first times I used those lights:
