Welcome to UHH Kelly, glad you joined us. Good first post. You might want to darken the background and bring out some of the detail in the dark areas of the stone.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.

Welcome

You might try softer light in a "light box" to get rid of the shadows and allow the colors and textures to be shown to greater advantage. And as stated a darker background color will cut down on the contrast.

Hi all I can't wait to start showing all of you some of my pictures of my agate, crystal and precious stones collection as well as my jewelry and craft work. I recently had to relearn how to work my Cannon: today I finally got my tripod, its a beautiful sunny day and I was so excited to snap photos..... except my tripod wasn't as sturdy as it should have been with my long zoom lens 70-300mm most of the pictures turned out blurry but I think I have that problem resolved when I take photos in morning sunlight and play around a little with aperture control. I did get one decent photo of an Lake Superior agate that I would love to share but get some feed back on or advice

Thank you for the advice. I joined a mineralogy group that is very particular about how you take your pictures of agates and other minerals. They say "Make sure it is quality, use a white or tan background ( ), take them outdoors direct sunlight".... I do have a decent lighting system....I think I will experiment at first with my home made light box and I also have two smaller lights that simulate sunrise or sunset light that work pretty good. I will give you an example of one of the first times I used those lights:
