I somehow got my nifty fifty really stuck on nikon 810. My local great camera store couldn't budge it either so off it went to Nikon for repair. Haven't received an estimate yet and have never dealt with nikon service before. My 810 was bought used but in excellent shape with about 35k actuations.

I considering depending on how much to fix it getting the 850 while on sale instead of putting money into it. I do mainly landscape, grandchildren and grandchildren sports. I like the articulating touch screen along with the pixel shifting and easier way of moving focus points and faster focusing system.
Money is never not an issue but I can afford the 850 although wife may not be happy.

In your opinion what dollar amount makes sense to ditch the 810 rendering it pretty much worthless and buying the 850. If I repair the 810 I'll keep it.

The D810 sells for over $1000 in working condition, and for around $400 for parts. So if the repair costs less than $600 you are better off getting it fixed.

Sounds like it was a mistake putting a cheap 'Toy' lens on an expensive Nikon body. Should have used a 50mm standard lens, from the start.

It was a nikon 50 1.8 so although not expensive I wouldn't call it a "toy". I had fallen with the camera and the Nikon 24-70 2.8 and was changing lens a couple of weeks later and had trouble taking it off and maybe should have stopped there. But got the 50 on partway and couldn't get it seated or off.

How do you know which 50mm lens the OP put on his D810?

I have both the 810 & 850. I find myself always going to the 850. Love the focus using the back button focus and joy stick. The moveable back screen comes in handy for lower shooting and all my still life shooting. There are additional functions too but the ones mentioned make a big difference. The 850 does not have a in camera flash if that makes a difference. It does have a hot shoe.

The OP referred to the lens as a "Nifty-Fifty". Sounds like a 'Toy' to me.

That's a common term for a 50mm lens - you probably just haven't heard it before.

Thanks / don't really care about the camera flash but like the other stuff. Can you tell a difference in focus speed and dynamic range?

I feel that both have improved, focus speed and dynamic range. I recently shot a local 4th of July parade and got wonderful pictures without any problems with focus. I was shooting at an intersection, the floats and people were making a turn, shooting far and near, bright sun and not so bright sun. Shooting with aperture priority I got about a 98% in focus, when not probably my fault with me not stable enough.

To bad you are not "Nifty" enough to know the vernacular for a 50 MM lens.

Oh, I have heard it used before, but it sounds like a juvenile term for a toy. Much prefer the standard 50mm lens.

A “nifty” 50 IS a standard 50mm lens. It has been the standard for film and full frame cameras for decades. It is called nifty because it is very versatile and usually high quality, and fast. Just because you don’t know the parlance of photography doesn’t mean the lens is a toy.
