Can anyone recommend an insurance to cover my expensive Nikon equipment (~20,000.00). I just sold my house and renting now so I don't have a homeowner insurance. I was quoted $400 for a renter insurance to cover $20K of photo equipment.
Check to see if your insurance company has renter's insurance which covers only your contents. Perhaps they have a rider or some other way to cover your camera equipment. MOst of the major insurance companies offer renter's insurance. Good luck.
Get personal property insurance from State Farm.

If you are a veteran, USAA offers property coverage insurance. If you live in Florida, you are out of luck.
State Farm quoted me the best price and policy.

I have rider on my home owners insurance through Allstate that covers all of my equipment. They also have a copy of my equipment list with serial numbers. I also have taken a image on each piece and keep a copy of the sales receipt just in case.

Whatever you get be sure to read the fine print. Many Homeowner and Renter's policies have exclusions if the loss occurs at any place other then the insured residence, etc. For my gear I have a rider on my Homeowner's policy that gives far better coverage then the policy alone would.

My advice would be to take the quoted policy, it's doubtful you'll find anything significantly less.

I would look at Chubb - they are actually in the business of providing insurance to photography professionals.
Riders, Homeowners policies etc - are all nice - UNTIL YOU MAKE A CLAIM - then all of a sudden you get higher rates, renewal refusals, and you bet blacklisted as high risk. It's not worth the headache. I will never use my homeowner's insurance to insure my camera gear ever again.

Thank you all for your replies, especially Lev29 for listing several relevant links. I will contact State Farm, and AAA as many of you recommended. While USAA seems to be one of the best, regrettably it is not an option for me.

Thanks Gene51. I just sent a request to Chubb and will look at joining NANPA
https://www.statefarm.com/insurance/home-and-property/personal-articles-policyI live in Brooklyn, NY and pay $258.00 a year for $18,000.00 coverage. Have used it twice and it paid for itself already for a couple of years. Received $1250 and $620 for damaged lenses. Don't forget to insure camera bags, batt. grips, monopods, tripods, filters, extra batteries and a bunch more.
Get a quote and see what you think? Good luck no matter who or what you use, but do get some if you equipment is worth it.
I have State Farm Ins. on my equipment as a personal property policy. It is not tied to my homeowners insurance but rather a stand alone policy. It covers $12,000 of equipment for $125/year.
