I was having lunch when I noticed a Northern Flicker on my deck. The slider was closed and I knew the noise of it opening and my movement would kill the opportunity. I gabbed my camera meanwhile it flew to the feeder. I put the lens onto the kitchen window (I had finally cleaned it) and got this shot.
It moved to the peanut feeder but I don't like on feeder shots.
This is rare for me. In more than 20 years year I have only seen this species in the yard a half dozen times. This is a male as it has the mustache which is not present on the females.
Great catch, Joe. An congratulations on the clean window!
It is amazing how lucky you can be with years of practice, the right equipment and patience, Joe.
Great shot of a bird I have only rarely seen around here, too!
A side note: I need to clean my glasses - I first read it as sitting on your desk - thought the window was open.
Good shot! I think the way they migrate, the way they stay near the edges of woods and their ground feeding habits make them less visible than they would be otherwise. They very rarely visit feeders. We either don't see them at all, or we see a bunch of them for a short period of time as they pass through here in northern Michigan in spring and fall.

Wonderful. You were obviously very wise to shoot through the window.
