There have been many posts about these two Nikon lenses. If you would like to see some real world examples of how well they work, please plan to addend my new show which will feature images taken with both lenses.
My photo show will be at the Weller Gallery at the Davis Education and Visitors Center in Fellows Riverside Gardens, Youngstown Ohio. 123 McKinley Ave. Tuesday-Sunday 10-5. Closed Monday. 330-740-7116. The show will run from August 17th to October 13th. Meet the artist date is Sunday, September 8, 1-3 pm. See you there.
Pictured below is an image example of the new Nikon 500mm f5.6 E PF ED VR. It is entitled, David vs. Goliath, it is an image of a Woodstork trying to push a young Cormorant out of its nest. Come to the show and see if it was successful in defending its nest.

If you had to have only one of these lenses (for birding) which would you choose. I have the 200-500 and considering the 500. Will it be worth the $$$

Tough question. I found myself using the 500mm setting on the 200-500 most of the time, so I thought it would be nice to have the less weight of the 500 5.6. I do most of my birding in Florida and I like to walk and hand hold. I find the 500 5.6 better suited to carry around for a few hours vs. the 200-500.
With that said the 200-500 is more versatile than the 500 5.6. There are times I do not need the reach and I need a smaller mm setting.
I tend to use the 500 on my D850 and the 200-500 tends to go on my D500. I use these lenses interchangeably so it is hard for me to really give a definitive answer to your question.
I really like the feel of the 500, fits nicely and with the vertical grip attached to my D850, there is a nice balance between the lens and body. My 200-500 balances nicely with the D500 with vertical grip attached.
I have only had the 500 since January and I leave Florida at the end of April so I have not used it that much but I have tended to use it more heavily as I got used to it.
My other two favorite wildlife lenses are the Nikon 300 f4 and the 70-200 2.8. I guess each of these lenses are used in different situations and I have been pleased with the results from all four.
I don't know if I have helped you in making your decision but wish you the best of luck.

This thread is not about lenses. It is about Billy promoting his upcoming show. The title is just to avoid having the thread moved to the proper section.

The nice thing is we actually got to see one of his pictures. If this is a indication of his work the show should be a smashing success!

Bill:
Good luck with the show. I have the 200-500 5.6 lens and I am looking forward to using it more for the upcoming high school sports season.

Good pick, the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 is ideal for sports. It has the new electronic aperture control that, when you are shooting high frames per second, will assure that each frame is exposed exactly the same.

They're both very good. The prime lens is smaller and lighter. Is this your first show? You seem to not let a single opportunity to promote it slip by. Good for you! Sell some of your art. Buy more lenses and cameras.

Nice shot, Bill. I am rooting for the Cormorant. Wish I could attend the show but we are still about 1000 miles apart. Good luck.

Pretty annoying that you didn't bother to list any pros and cons for either of the two lenses. This seems to be an abuse of the forum.

Don't really do it to sell. Gives me an opportunity to educate others on wildlife conservation and preservation. And, it also gives this retired old geezer something to do.
