NO.

If I were you, I would go to SONY and use their Clear Image Zoom with their 100-400 - the A9 or A7RIV being the best options but the A6400 will give more reach.

Here is a shot I did with the A77II and Sigma 100-300 f4 with 1.7X CIZ for 510mm@f4 ..... (on crop frame)
.

Another good combo would be the A6400 with the Tamron (or Sigma) 100-400 with the Sigma MC11 adapter - but I am not sure how well it works ......Hopefully, some day, some Hogger will tell us !

An issue not mentioned in other responses is the lack of availability of the Nikon 500 PF. I have had one on order at B&H for 3 months now. From what I have read about the situation, I'm not even close to actually getting delivery.

So will the G9/100-400 cut it ?
or do you have an alternative?

My friend does her biding with the 100-400 on
a GX8 and results are perfect. G9 will just make
like even easier ... 60fps at 18MP [6K vid-stills].

I don't have a 100-400 but I do use the G9 and
it's gotta be the next best thing to an OMD MX1
for any type of action subjects.

I sold my Nikon and Olympus gear and bought into Sony. I will however, make a couple of suggestions: Consider a Nikon D500 + Nikkor 500mm f5.6 PF ED VR + TC14EIII, or a Nikkor 300mm PF ED VR + TC14EIII. I owned a D500 + the affore - mentioned 300mm and TC and it was a lightweight system which produced stunning images. I also owned a Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6, which I actually preferred, even though it was so heavy to lug about for 7 hours a day, so I empathise with you. I always carry two cameras and the partner system to my D500 was an Olympus EM1 mark II + Oly 300mm f4 + 1.4TC. In all honesty, brilliant though my Nikon gear was, in my hands the EM1 mark II was a better wildlife camera. It has now had a firmware update and is even better. I also owned the PanaLeica 100 - 400mm, which was a great lens, both lightweight and versatile, but was not as good optically as my Oly 300mm. The G9 cannot compete AF wise with the EM1 mark II, as Panasonic cameras use contrast detection and not phase detection. I believe you would be bitterly disappointed in the AF performance of a G9 after using a D850. The images produced by both the D500 APS-C and the EM1 mark II M43 are stunning. I can hardly tell the difference between them when shooting in decent to good lighting conditions.
I sold my Nikon and Olympus gear and bought into S... (show quote)

I may have missed something so forgive me if you’ve already answered this. You said you sold all your Nikon and Olympus gear and switched to Sony.

I find this interesting because I have Nikon (D500) and Sony (a7iii) and was thinking about switching to Olympus (EM1 MkII).

Four questions:
1. Which Sony did you switch to?
2. Did you like the Olympus?
3. Are you happy with your choice?
4. Why did you switch?

Use a D850 without the external battery and the 500PF for best results and minimum weight!

The answer is easy - use the D850 and the 500 PF. WAY lighter, super versatile, and it will get you far better results than the smaller sensors (assuming you're filling the frame adequately of course).

But the 500 PF is on back-order!!

Steve, other than the field of view, why would a D8XX give significantly better results than a D7XXX camera? Their sensors are basically the D8XX sensors approximately cut in half, aren't they?

My vote here would be for the 500 PF and, perhaps, paired with the D500. Best of luck.

The 20 mp of the DX crop on the D850 gives a better image than the D7200 24 mp sensor..different sensor and different Nikon Sauce. The D500 is also better than the D7200
