Wow,
Thank you all so much. As to the cell phone quandry, I was at a fund raiser at my church a few weeks ago. One of my friends who has a very nice DSLR camera, but not with him, wanted a photo of a partiular scene. The lighting was poor and even with the cells phone's flash, it was way too dark and not very good. I took the same photo with my speedlight and D3400 and it was almost spot on. We allowed as how that was a good example, and there are many more, of when a camera if far superior to a cell phone camera.

Yes, they are getting better, but so are the cameras. Those who can afford the best cell phones with the best cameras could just as easily buy a good DSLR. However, I think they are not as invested in the art of photography. I know that some are fantastic and some are used to record commercials and the like. I just do not believe they will push cameras out of the way.

Again thank you who had good advice on the upgrade cameras. I will research it and when I am able to upgrade I will show the differences between the two for me.

I am shooting a Nikon D3400 DX right now. It is fine, but I feel like there may be something more to be done now with another DX upgrade to help me be a better photographer. I understand some of them have better sensors, more control over some features.

Right now I am mainly taking photos of events at my church and mostly following the progress of houses being rebuilt from damage c/o Hurricane Harvey in the Dickinson, TX area.

Until I decide if I am going to concentrate on landscape, birds and animals, insects and flowers or whatever, the lenses I have are enough (so I believe): 18-55 mm and 70-300 mm kits lenses, 35 mm DX f/1.8, 50 mm FF f/1.8 and an 18-140 mm DX f/3.5-5.5. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

The first thing I would do is list down what aspects of your present camera you are presently not too happy with and what options you would like that you do not have now.

Actually, for anyone really serious about photography, having a good quality cellphone with decent built-in camera is not a bad idea. And also take the time to learn how to get the most out of it. At very least, for all those times when you don't have a dedicated camera with you. I've heard many claim that this is never the case, as they ALWAYS have their camera equipment on them wherever they go. But I don't think they are entirely truthful. For example, whenever I go to a shopping mall or a food store, I NEVER see anyone carrying a DSLR. Even busy photographers need to go shopping or run errands sometimes.

Ridiculous, let me see you shoot wildlife or BIF with cellphone cameras that match DSLR's or mirror less cameras.

Just a quick note on the cell phone discussion. I recently visited the aquarium at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, and just last weekend went to the Field Museum of Natural History and the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. I left my camera equipment at the hotel and took pictures with my Samsung S6 Edge+. I have a third-party app that gives you quite good control over the settings, and I'm sure I got some pictures that I never could have taken with my D7200 without a tripod. The camera phone gives a great DOF with a small aperture, and the image stabilization seems superb, with hand-holding shots at 1/40 and below coming out sharp. I'm at work right now, so I can't post any of them. Now, I'm not going to try to take a lot of wildlife shots or anything with a lot of action. The phone couldn't achieve focus on some of the fast-moving fish in the aquarium, but I'm not sure my Nikon could either, with the dim lighting provided.

Go for the 7200. I went from a D3100 to a D7200 and I love. 2 card slots on the 7200 is a plus, lots of great features. Keep all your lenses, they are compatible. Keep the 3400 as a backup. I still have my 3100.

It doesn’t sound like ANY of your equipment is holding you back from making quality and appealing images. You may WANT something new but you don’t NEED something new. A “better” sensor will not improve you composition, depth of field, or perspective. Creativity comes from within, not the new shiny thing.

If your budget will handle it, D 500. If not D 7200 or D 7500.

Now that is one of the absolutely dumbest responses I have seen on UHH! Just because you are a cellphone fanboy doesn’t mean that other opinions are invalid. Climate change will make your opinion moot as the earth suffers cataclysmic change and we die. Random shootings are only acceptable if you a member of the do-nothing Congress.

Sticking with Nikon, you have a choice of D7200 or D7500. The D500 has been discontinued. There's nothing wrong with buying a newer, better camera. We're not in this solely for simple picture-taking. It should be fun, too. A new camera will energize your enthusiasm.

The camera the OP is using right now is not very friendly for those who want to take more control and rely less on the auto features. It would be easier to be creative with some of the other cameras mentioned, for that reason alone.

For what you are shooting, you do not need any other camera or lens. The D3400 is totally capable, and on a par with the sensors of those other DX cameras. If you want to try it, a D5xxx will give you the versatility of a fully articulated rear screen, which none of the other DX cameras offer. The D500 doesn't even have a built-in flash, which is a deal-breaker for me. (If you have the cash, and are really antsy to get a more contemporary DX upgrade, the D7500 would be a good choice.)
