I've caught a few in-flight before...but this is the first time I ever got one sneaking so as not to be photographed...he was looking for the female who was calling him

Those birds can stay like that for hours. It's pretty rare to catch them in flight. I've got them a few times in flight but only because I've spend many a day watching them with their heads sticking up out of the pickle weed like in your picture.
