This is a large tree mushroom --about the size of a soccer ball. Rain revealed colors and texture I had not previously noticed. Olive trees are plentiful hereabouts and this mushroom grows fairly commonly at the base of their trunks. An hour's use of the photo and Google indicates that it is probably
Ganoderma lucidum (Lingzhi) ---?
👍 There is a similar one which is very appropriately called the 'turkey tail'.
I've photographed fungi before too, but it has been a long time.
optic, you captured this one well... you could have just walked by and not noticed it... thank you for photographing and sharing.
Fungi once owned the world. When the temp goes up and the ocean evaporation causes great perpetual rain, then once again they will flourish. They are complex and in their own way beautiful. Just look at this one with the colors, shapes, and patterns... what a structure!!

Very interesting and a good photo. But put your self in the tree's position. Just standing there, no arms, no way to ask for help, with this monstrosity slowly growing out of your skin. A never ending nightmare.

Your suspicion is noted.
like many of us, it's showing its age
Cool. I think that is the species I photographed in the late 1970's in Temple City, CA.
Trametes sp. I'm sure.

Yes, that quote is from the end of his book. It is also the title of an album by Nightwish.
Look At It Full Sized. There are Animals and Plants and human creations there but you have to look closely.
