Because we are all dying to know, Lensrentals scienterifically tests and compares the sound made by many of their most popular cameras. They not only offer a short video for you to hear for yourself (both single shots and continuous shooting), but also share their own "objective" views.

"As a leading authority on optical testing and product reviews, it occurred to the Lensrentals staff recently that we owed it to The Internet to explore the final frontier of camera comparisons, a comprehensive examination of shutter sounds. Our thorough and scientific testing covered multiple models from nearly every major camera manufacturer. After weeks of debate and analysis, we believe we’ve finally reached a consensus on which camera shutters are the best and which camera shutters are the worst."

Among the best sounding shutters:

"Pentax 645Z... No one within fifty feet of the Pentax 645Z will have any doubts as to who has territorial dominance in the area. Prove to your friends and neighbors that you’re recording more pixels than they are and, therefore, are the better photographer. I bet your iPhone can’t make this much noise!"

Among the worst sounding shutters:

"Sony Alpha a77 II... We think our problem with this one is mostly instinctive. Imagine that high-pitched burst coming out of an animal. What animal are you picturing? A snake, right? It’s snake-like. That scares us subconsciously."

Some of the results of other tests might surprise you.

So go get a cup of coffee, point your computer to https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/07/the-shutter-sounds-of-our-most-popular-cameras/ and position your tongue firmly in your cheek. Be sure to play the video with your computer's sound volume turned up high. This may help you choose your next camera. Or make you want to dump the one you just bought.

Feel free to agree or disagree with their findings.... It's all "in the ear of the beholder", anyway.

Wow, I can't believe I sat through that video I must be more bored than I thought. Final evaluation--who cares.

Now, now, don't be so quick to judge! This looks like the perfect opportunity for some enterprising individual to put together a chest mounted pick-up mike, sound board, amplifier, and speaker so that those with 'camera envy' can announce to everyone within miles that they have THE Alpha Male camera!

Wow what a great idea. If I wasn't so old, tired and lazy I might follow up on that myself.

I never gave much thought as to how a shutter sounds but I've heard the D850 sounds wonderful! How can a camera shutter sound wonderful? I once had a Kodak point & shoot that made a low pitched whistling sound, now that's wonderful!

Who picks a camera by it's shutter sound? Stupid waste of time article.
