Google wasn't much help, so I'm asking all of you. Is there a processing program that will process an image as a circle? The result would not be a rectangle; it would be a disk.

EDIT: No sooner had I posted this than I saw directions for doing this in PS and PSE. If anyone know of other programs that can do this, I'd be glad to hear about them.

You can crop to a round shape using Photoshop; but I do not think that is what you are asking

Yes, and no. PS and PSE can do it, but I was looking for a quick and easy one step. Select "Circle" and then drag it over the image. I guess that's not possible.

Hello, Jerry!

There is a filter in Affinity Photo called "Rectangular to Polar" that seems to do what you describe. In order to get a disk, you need to first crop the rectangular photo to a square. As you might expect, it introduces a lot of distortion. Not sure if that's what you had in mind -- hope it helps...

Elements 14 will do it also (probably 19 too).
BOY do I have a lot of learning to do!!!
I just normally use a rectangular crop.

Your last two links have the letters ‘crop’ in them. Are there characters outside the circle which are not defined but could be defined? Could you post an example??

The example below consists of a round 'crop' of the photo.

The area outside the circle but in the enclosing square is defined to be white.

The remaining rectangle was not defined at all - gimp shows it as a checker-board ...if I download it to my computer it shows as light gray.

Many editors will make the "checkered" (transparent) area white when saved as a JPEG. Transparent as a PNG or GIF. Elements does. JPEG cannot handle transparency.

OK, the JPG is stored here as containing a round area, a square area, and a transparent area.

My original question of @jerryc41 can be written as, is the square enclosing the cropped round area transparent?

What's the transparent in the posted JPEG image? The white is not, the image is not.

Sorry for the delay, dinner got in the way.

These are resized to large, as detail is not needed to show the differences.
The white in the JPEG is NOT transparent, JPEGs cannot accommodate transparency.
GIFs and PNGs accommodate transparency.

If you see a white box around the GIF and/or PNG,
Look here for a real view:

(I have no Idea why UHH would put up a white background around them them. The image background color is set to "white" here at UHH.)

Notice that with the download of the PNG and GIF the background is indeed light gray, not white.
