I read some post here from a couple of years ago where most people preferred LR Classic. Is that still the case or has LR CC caught up enough?

LR CC and LR Classic are similar yet different and provide for differing uses of images. Neither is better or worse, it's simply a matter of what you want to do with your images and how you want to do it. I still work on my desktop so I use Classic. I don't have a need to edit on my iPhone or iPad, nor show photos on them. It's always about the best tool for the goal you want to accomplish. I think the answers to your question will be varied based on how people manage their images and the way they use their images.

Most people on UHH seem to prefer LR Classic. At least they are the most vocal about it. However if you look at the larger market, that is not the case.

They are two different programs. LR (no longer called LR CC) is the new program with a different interface and it also runs on mobile devices like cell phones and laptops, etc. It defaults to keeping images in the cloud server but you can set it to keep a local copy if you prefer.

LR Classic is program that evolved from Lightroom5 when the subscription model came out.

LR has caught up a lot with “Classic” however there are some functions still missing in LR, like the ability to rename image files from within the program. And I think I would still give the edge to “Classic” for DAM.

Adobe seems to have designed LR for ease of syncing from Classic to LR, but not the reverse. It is a quite a bit more involved to sync from LR to Classic. I find this a disadvantage as I would like to be able to import to my iPad for renaming, a first cut and rating, then sync back to Classic. Sadly I still cannot rename from within LR and syncing back to Classic and renaming is more convoluted that it should be. It’s too easy to end up with two sets of the same images with different names.

Which you use probably depends on your level of experience with “Classic”. If you have a lot of experience with it you will probably prefer it. If you are new to adobe then you may prefer LR and it’s ability to sync easily across all your devices.

I always think of Lightroom (mobile version) as LR Lite and Classic as full service, which I prefer. I don't use tablets or smartphones to edit photos beyond maybe a few tweaks for immediate posting, and I don't edit across platforms, so I don't really need the syncing between devices.

The edits you can make in the two versions are pretty much equivalent now, though the way you access the different tools looks different. I use LR Classic on my desktop, with my big monitor and my external drives that hold and back up all my photos. I use LRCC on my elderly and somewhat limited laptop because it works better on that machine than Classic does. And I use LRCC on my ipad and phone since Classic doesn't work on those anyway. I am more comfortable with Classic because I've used it for years and its interface is second nature, but I can get pretty much the same stuff done on LRCC.

The biggest difference is in what package you choose to subscribe to from Adobe. If you want all your photos in the cloud, do primarily mobile work, and don't want Photoshop, then you may want the Lightroom Photography plan. If you like a desktop model where all your photos live on your drives, you want Photoshop, and you only use the cloud when traveling, the plain old Photography plan may be your choice (that's what I have). The cost is the same, though you can add Photoshop for double your money to the non-Photoshop plan and still have the extra cloud space too.

My shooting has changed significantly over the last couple years. I used to be involved in a lot of things and did a lot of event shooting for PR purposes. Then I retired and moved away and now my shooting is predominately home stuff and a few trips. The home stuff gets the big rigs, shooting raw, and postprocessing in LR/PS with DAM applications. The trips and a lot of family stuff locally get the iPhone and sharing by text. Occasionally something will get sent to the desktop and into LR where I can transmogrify it at will.

So, for me, LR Classic is the one. The big rigs are at home, where they get used, so it's easy to get the images into LR for further polishing. The iPhone shots tend to be lightly edited in iPhone apps (probably mostly cropping) and shared immediately.

If I were still shooting the events for PR purposes I would probably be using LR (mobile) more and sharing things from there because the response time is significantly shortened. Even so, I would get scooped by the iPhone shots going directly to social media.

I still prefer the big rigs for technical reasons.

I continue to use Lightroom Classic. Lightroom CC still has some features lacking compared to Lightroom Classic and I am not certain Adobe will make Lightroom CC as feature rich. Lightroom CC is more for the mobile environment (cell phones, tablets, etc) and is good for accomplishing quick edits if one so chooses and synchronization with Lightroom Classic via the Creative Cloud allows one to basically continue with the edits in Lightroom Classic. This is how I would use Lightroom CC and never on my computer, but truthfully, I don't have the need for it. I prefer to focus on shooting when I am out and about saving post processing for when I return home.
