My wife and I went out to Two Jacks lake to take some sunrise pics. As we were heading back to our hotel for breakfast, we came across a young grizzly walking along side the road. My wife had the luck to be on the best location, and took a nice pic of the bear. It was so close, she used the 55mm extension of her lens on a Nikon D90.

We were in a car, and were prepared to leave if he even looked irritated.

A few years ago, a Yellowstone ranger was showing a PowerPoint presentation at our local Audubon meeting. He mentioned during the presentation how the most common question asked at the park was, Where are the bears?" He always responded the same way. "In Chicago" to avoid serious mishaps that occasionally took place by foolhardy visitors.

I read, in an outdoor magazine a number of years ago, about the speed of grizzlies and brown bears. They can out run a horse for about 50 yards, and they are far quicker than they look.

One of the anecdotes by the author was that he observed a grizzly rooting through some rotten wood. It surprised a marten, which attempted to escape by running through the grizzly's legs. Before the marten cleared the grizzly's body, the bear turned and trapped the marten.

Another post on this forum, showed how a bison launched a child about ten feet with a head butt.

Good move.

Grizzly bears are carnivores.

They eat plants and insects as well, making them omnivores.
