Some thoughts on "moments" (3).
Theatre:
This is from photographing classical music (choral) concerts over the last 10 years and one opera production.
Most of the events are indoors and light levels can be low to very low.
During concerts you cannot do anything that will distract the audience, so that means all shots are hand held held using available light.
The best time to shoot is during rehearsals, especially dress rehearsals, when you have almost complete freedom of movement.
Also shooting during rehearsal you will know what to expect during a performance.
In the past I used two similar bodies with fast, at least f2, primes. One was a wide angle and the other a telephoto, I was usually shooting at maximum, or near maximum ISO.
Nowdays, with improved high ISO performance I still use two identical bodies, one with a wide to mid telephoto f2.8 zoom and the other with a mid teephoto to long telephoto f2.8 zoom.
The reason I use two bodies is that it is very difficult to change lenses in the dark, also it means I have a backup as I am shooting for a "client".
Both cameras are set up with the focus assist light off and the focus conformation "beep" off.
Here are some examples.
#1 - During a rehearsal - this is the sort of light levels you may be looking at 1/60 @ f2.8 & ISO 12800 F=300mm (35mm fov equivalent).
#2 - During a dress rehersal. I was leaning against the stage.
#3 - During a rehearsal.
#4 - During a performance - this why it pays to attend rehearsals
#5 - During a rehersal. I was standing behind and looking past the choir members.
