PROBLEM WITH AF-S NIKON 80-400

I just bought a Nikon AF-S 80-400 f4.5-5.6 ED VR lens to replace my original 80-400 AF-D bought in 2000. I use a Nikon D810. I now have a total of three fast Nikon AF-S lenses and a fast 1.4 85mm that is AF-I. I frequently change the aperture/shutter speed combination selected by the software (displayed in the viewfinder) by rotating the command dial on the top right of the camera back in order to get a different combination of aperture and shutter speed. The viewfinder display instantly shows a different correct combination of aperture and shutter speed. All three of my older lenses permit this operation but the new Nikon 80-400 does not. With the lens mounted on the camera and focused on a subject, turning the main command dial does nothing. Any ideas?

It's a bit facetious but I wonder if the newest ones are smart enough to make you turn off the VR when it's on a tripod. Mine did not like it when I forgot to do that.

You have to give the shutter button a little tap. I have the same gear. I use BBF.

Hmm - not sure on that one then. I was thinking you may have had Auto ISO on - when it's on, it can limit "Flexible Program" functionality. With Auto ISO off, it should work as you expect. If anything else comes to mind, I'll post.

This is a puzzling thing. I have grown accustomed to having to tap the shutter release to engage the front dial. I shoot AP. I took it out a little earlier and it worked as it should. Like going to the dentist and now the tooth doesn't hurt. I am inclined to think it may have something to do with the lens to camera contacts. Next time it misbehaves I will try remounting the lens to see if that might be the problem.

If I understand correctly, you are saying you have the older lens and it works fine, and when you swap it out for the new lens, without changing any camera settings, it does not work the same way? Given that, then it seems to me that the lens has a problem. The camera and lens are not “communicating”.
Maybe take a close look at the electronic contacts on the lens see if there is any debris or perhaps a piece of plastic or something preventing contact. You can also try cleaning the contacts.
Maybe it is time to take a trip back to the camera store where you bought it and take you lens and your camera and show them the problem.

VR is a handy thing for handheld....however on a tripod, it is typically turned off...Camera software looks for vibration that is not there
