I've heard a rumor that the Nikon is going to use the new 61MP chip in one of their cameras

I read that they bought a 61MP chip from Sony, but they never give away their plans for cameras in advance, and they keep secrets well.

Nikon have been using Sony chips for years. If they ever come out with a 61mp camera I'm sure it will be a Sony too.

I have heard multiple stories, but what a Nikon rep told me was that Nikon designs it's own high end sensors, that it has a whole design department for sensors, but they have them made at different manufacturers including Sony. He specifically mentioned the D850 back side illuminated sensor (which I was asking about as I bought my D850 that day) was totally designed by Nikon. So the questions I would like answered is who designed the sensor and then who made it.

This is from PetaPixel on 6/15/18: "The Nikon D850 contains one of the most highly regarded sensors on the market today, and Nikon has touted the fact that it was designed entirely by Nikon and not simply an off-the-shelf sensor. But in case you were wondering who its manufactured by, a new report has now concluded that it’s a Sony-made sensor. ... This seems to confirm the fact that Nikon designed the D850’s sensor and had Sony manufacture it to Nikon’s specifications."

Qualcomm, largest smartphone RF chip maker, designs the chips and handles their insertion, compatibility into each phone made by the phone manufacturers. It does not manufacture the chips; it is fabless. The chips are made by Samsung ( I think if memory serves me) and other chip foundries. So, the fact that Sony--which has a lot of experience manufacturing sensor chips--actually makes Nikon chips is not a negative. Plus, the chip making is very capital intensive and dependent on volume production. Everybody from the camera maker, chip maker to the camera buyer benefits with a superior product that costs less.

Outsourcing manufacturing of propriety designed items is not only common, it makes sense. The manufacturing of some items is so highly specialized requiring huge investments in infrastructure, tooling, controlled ultra-pure environments, and specialized skilled labor that it works out well for both companies even though they compete on some product lines in this case.

Sony made the investment for their own needs and rather than let it be underutilized they agreed to provide services for others, for a profit of course. They also learn what their competition is doing and they can use it as a springboard for their own R&D (avoiding patent infringements and breach of confidentiality agreements of course).

Nikon and Pentax both have used Sony Sensors in many of their cameras for years, nothing new there. As does Sony for their cameras, obviously. Example, from what I understand the Nikon D810 and the Pentax K-1 used pretty much the same 36MP FF 24x36mm Sensor. The Pentax probably a later variation. Though the two cameras are not identical, the processors and other features are different. I would even image there are Nikon and Sony and other MILCs and DSLRs using the same or similar Sony Sensors. Canon has been making their own Sensors, is that still true today?

For a customer the size of Nikon wouldn't you think Sony would give them free sample of any new sensor they want to sell?

A product manufacturer, in this case Nikon, designing the chips used in their equipment is a historic reality going back (in my personal knowledge) at least 50 years. Not only that but just about all products have a history, going back as far as you'd care to look, of the manufacturer designing and then subcontracting the actual build of sub components. IE Ford didn't build everything that went into the model T

YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED WHAT COMPANIES KNOW ABOUT EACH OTHER'S SECRETS.
