Do you have Lightroom Classic? Export them to JPG's.

I may be wrong (not a Nikon user), but I don't think LR 5 will convert (or even open) your D850 NEF files, but the latest version of Lightroom Classic will.

Your Nikon comes with a copy of Capture NX-D -- free from Nikon and a simple download. It will convert your NEF files to JPEG.

There is a free program I have used several times called Instant JPEG from RAW. It works very well. You can have the program put the JPEGs in a separate folder or along side the raw file. Works very quickly with D850 NEF files. Works for me..

Your LR5 software probably cannot read the NEF directly as the camera was released after the software. The Nikon software will do the trick for free. Also for free is Adobe's DNG converter that runs in batch. Convert the NEF to DNG, then inport the DNG to LR5 and away you go.

You've gotten some good recommendations on how to do what you are asking. But I have one question. You have probably the best camera on the planet, you are recording raw files - why are you looking to simply convert raw to jpeg? Are you not comfortable with post processing?

Agree with you, but I have some shots shot in NEF format, would like to convert those. Now I am only shooting in Raw+Jpeg

First, let me suggest that you upgrade to a newer version of Lightroom - after spending the kind of money you did for the camera it's a bit foolish to use years-old software that cannot in itself read the D850 NEF files.

To answer your follow on question, LR "Classic" is the current offering from Adobe that resides on your computer (just like LR5 does) but rather than pay a one-time license fee for it now you pay $10/month as a subscription. Said subscription also allows you to use what they call Lightroom CC (because the dolts in Adobe's marketing department are apparently brain dead and like to confuse us all) - the CC version does not have the feature set of Classic but includes the ability to store and share and work on phots in the Adobe cloud. That $10 fee also gives you license to use Photoshop, so it's not a bad deal (except to those who grimace at the idea of not being able to "buy" software - though in fact they never could really buy software - when you paid $600 for Photoshop in years past you were paying for the license giving you permission to use it).

Alternate programs that can make use of the D850's NEF files are also available, and for that matter you can download Nikon's own demosaicing program Capture NX-D.

Note that it is impossible to view a NEF file, because until some software does the process called "demosaicing" (you can look that up if you like; I and others have described it here and there are plenty of hits on Google as well) there is no image. When you "chimp" on the camera LCD you are in fact viewing the JPEG image that the in-camera computer has demosaiced from that NEF file.

You don't mention what kind of computer you use - if a Mac then the OSX system has built-in demosaic capabilities, provided you get the appropriate level of update (every digital camera has a unique raw file format, so even though all of Nikon raw files are appended with NEF the D850 NEF file cannot be read by an older program that, for instance, might be able to read a D600 NEF file or a D3200 NEF file. On Windows machines this is not the case, but I believe Adobe camera raw is the way to achieve the same upgrade capability 9and of course that's part of the Adobe subscription package as well).

I hope that made some kind of sense. You might also want to consider getting more storage space if you have an older computer since the D850 file sizes are very likely larger than you previous cameras.

Capture NX-D gets my vote as well. Simple and free.
Also you can do it as a "batch".

If you’re shooting in RAW+JPEG, you already have the JPEG files in your camera. Just use those files instead of the RAW files. If you can’t figure out how to do that, I suspect that the technology of your very expensive camera is way beyond your abilities.
