I bought an excellent mid 2015 macbook pro from them here in Charlotte. Don”t settle for the first one they might show you especially if it has dents scratches or abuse flaws. Also avoid an early 2011 15” MacBook Pro as they are defective. Do some Research before you shop as some of the later MacBook have trouble with the keyboard.

You can limit your search by a number of parameters. And you can set a reminder if there's a particular configuration you want that isn't available at the moment - they'll send you an email when it comes back into stock.

If it were my kid, though, I'd start by checking out the educational discount from Apple on new products. That way you'll know what you're really saving when you look at refurbs. And you can see what you're giving up (and getting - I'm thinking extra USB ports, maybe an SD card slot) in older models.

In any event, I can't imagine buying one of these things without an Apple factory warranty, perhaps even an extended one. I don't think you can get one of those on a Craigs List purchase, and I would be suspicious of an ebay seller who claimed theirs came with one (unless it was one of the established refurb sellers just using ebay as another sales outlet.)

Just got one for my grandson. Found a (2019) refurbished/open box one at the local Best Buy for a good price. It was the 15" model and looked like new. He loves it.

I'd buy refurbished from Apple. Otherwise, you just never know. I bought a couple of refurbs with no regrets.
