Hi, I am a rookie at this. presently using canon 7d with canon 100-400L (not the 2). Looking to upgrade bodies. Realize the 7d2 is 5 year old technology but still sound like a great camera for birds of flight with fast focus, frames per second, and crop sensor for reach. Like everything about the 5d4 except the added cost compared to the 7d2. Is the 5d2 that much better in low light? Long term goal is to upgrade to the canon 100-400L2. Appreciate your thoughts and input. Kahunaal
Don't know Canon equipment but also check out how much the buffer holds as this is important for wildlife and BIF in many cases.

The 7DII is awesome for fast action shots like BIF. It does just fine in low light but not as well as the 5d4. The 5d4 has much better detail in the images because of the higher density sensor, but does not focus as quickly as the 7DII does. My old 7DII got stolen and I bought another used from Adorama at a decent discount. I love the 5D4, but the 7DII will always have a place in my kit.

Your right, the 5D is newer technology and it shows. The 5D is an all around better camera.

The 7DII is a great action/wildlife/bird camera even if it is in need of an upgrade - more mp comes to mind. For birds I will usually use my 7DII (or 80D which stays on a tripod with a Tamron 150-600 G2). The 80D has the newer sensor but the 7DII has the AF options etc. I usually have the 7DII set up with the 100-400L mk2 often with a 1.4x III extender.
I used my 7DII with a 100-400L mk1 for a few years and if I still had that rig would not feel slighted except for the faster AF (the reason I went from the 100-400L mk1 to the mk2) and slight improvement in corner IQ.
The 5DIV is newer tech - being FF you need a much longer lenses or get close. I use my 5DIV with my 100-400L mk2 when I am in my blind or can otherwise get close.
And of course in dim light the FF does better with less noise.
This is now an edit since I realized the title said 5DIV and I answered the body which said 5d2.

Uh! Not the 5DII which is what the OP asked about. 5DIV yes, but for birds you need to get closer or a much longer lens.
Opps! he says 5DIV in the title and 5D2 in the body.

The OP mentioned both the 5D IV and the 5D II in his post. I have a feeling the 5D II reference may have been a typo.

There is no shame in a 80D for you ! - I use the 80D with the 400 prime ( MUCH cheaper than the II zoom!) - very fast focus ! Why? - Because the focusing elements in the prime are quite small - and no IS either to get in the way. 7 FPS is not terrible ...and the sensor is quite good ( for a Canon )
You also might want to look at the 1D Mk IV in the same price range - but make sure you get a low mileage one ....

I posted this in another thread, but it is related to your question.
My two favorite bird photographers use Canon gear.
Sharron Crocker uses a 5DMkIII and either a 400mmF5.6 or a 100-400 II occasionally with a 1.4X TC
https://untamednewyork.smugmug.com/BirdsAnd Laura Meyers uses a 5DMkIV and a 100-400 II also with a 1.4X TC
https://www.flickr.com/photos/laurameyers/with/48080807446/Both used a 7D2 but moved on and rarely use their crop cameras.

Maybe wait for the 90D to come out, it is supposed to replace the 7DMkII and is going to be over 30mp. I had the 7DII and felt that it was way too noisy and was much happier with the 5DIV for birding but I really like my 5DSR better than any of them but there is some compromise with using that camera. I think that the 90D promises to bring the High Speed shutter of the 7DII together with the pixel density of the 5DSR with a better focusing system than the older technology of the 5DmkIII which the 5DSr employs. Canon Rumors has that camera coming out this fall at a reasonable price.

I would hold a couple months more and go with the 90D which is said to be replacing the 7DII and looks like a real upgrade over 7DII and a major one over the 7D which is what I use as well.

7dM2 has the reach on the 5dM4. The 5dM4 has the meg. count over the 7dM2. I know a lot of shooting buddies that use the 100-400 II. Forget the I, not nearly as good as the II version. And this is based on my shooting buddies moving from the I to the II. They all say the II is light years ahead of the I.

My suggestion, before you start investing in gear for bird photography (it can get expensive!) check out Sony. There is no argument the focusing capabilities of the a9 will run circles around anything canon has to offer and with new models arriving soon, the a9 price will drop. Sony’s 100/400 gym is a great lens. Good or better than canon equivalent.

Are you currently shooting Sony and do you not have issues with tracking and HS shutter with a mirrorless camera?
