We were tooling around Gaffney, SC, when we came across this structure. I have seen several throughout the Southeast USA.

Many towns had streetcar systems with such attendant buildings. Especially in the thirties. As to the one in the shot, I have not found any information.

I believe that is a sub-station, used to take power off the grid and transfer it to where it is needed.

It may be that.

I came across this item: https://obrag.org/2019/07/the-weirdest-building-in-ocean-beach-history-an-egyptian-revival-trolley-station-once-stood-at-bacon-and-west-point-loma/

Note the door with the high transom. That suggests that the trolleys could be brought in and worked on. It is about the right height and width.

Perhaps there's a historian in the city offices of Gaffney that would know. I tend to agree with rehess, however, the steel structure seems more indicative of an electrical sub station. But I do hope it turns out to be a former trolley facility!

Another tidbit regarding trolleys in South Carolina:

A facility was needed to provide the DC power for the trolley motors. Transformers were used to convert the AC to DC.

Thanks for the input.
