Nice photos. Rattlesnakes are pretty much where you find them. If you found this one near San Antonio it definitely is not an Eastern Diamondback. More in the Western Diamondback class. I doubt it is a pygmy rattlesnake either. It looks too big.
You are correct about watching where you step. While rattlesnakes are all over the West there are also plenty in the East as well. While touring the Custer National Monument in MT I crossed paths with a small rattler on the walking trail. Not wanting to fire a handgun on a national monument I stepped around it. I grew up in NYS where I know there are rattlesnakes but never saw one. A copperhead was seen occasionally but never a rattlesnake. Now that my granddaughters are living in Pittsburgh, PA I have seen numerous videos on youtube showing that huge rattlesnakes do live around the Pittsburgh hills. I keep my distance from all snakes but usually shoot poisonous snakes. Yes I know I am evil to some. I'm good.
