I recently was on a month-long trip to South Africa for the "sardine run" followed by a safari. I took photos with my underwater camera and, trying to be careful, I extracted the card and stored it with my other cards because I was leaving all of my dive gear at a hotel while I went to the safari. One evening I put the card into my Nikon D850 to review the images and there was nothing there. Obviously I was quite distraught. However, when I got home and put the card into my iMac all of the images were intact (yes!!!!!!).
Can you explain why the images did not show in the camera but did show on the computer?
Thanks so much.

...card was not formatted for D850? Just a guess on my part.

Specific camera's look within certain folders to look for images - I would suspect that the underwater camera stores images in a specific subfolder, and the Nikon D850 looks elsewhere for images.

When you say you took pictures "with your underwater camera," are you referring to the D850 in an underwater housing, or do you have another camera that is your "underwater camera?"

That could be it, too. It was formatted for the other camera.
Thanks so much.

Only the camera that took the pictures can show them on its LCD. Different cameras can use the same card, but they cannot display each other's photos.

I had the same thing happen last week with my D800. Took about 50 shots of a family party and everything looked good in reviewing the pictures at the even. When I tried to show the pics from the camera the next morning there were all gone. All my shots from the earlier events were still there.

I apologized to the people and told them the camera lost all the pictures. I was happy that I took many backups with my cell phone so I did have pictures of the dinner. Once I got home and put the card in my computer all the photos were still their. I can't explain it. But, it happens.

Good luck.

That's not necessarily true.
For example, my Canon 760D can display pictures from my 650D and my 550D. However, my Canon 550D cannot display pictures from my 650D or the 760D. The 650D can display pictures from the 550D but not from the 760D. However, I can use the 760D card with its pictures in my 650D or 550D cameras and record and see pictures, just not the pictures that already are there from the most recent camera.
My computers, of course, can read any and all of them.
