I could have a go at Ayn Rand quotes but they're pretty funny as they are. You know, seeing how she ended up on welfare and all.
Strange, in the 1980s, Mississippi teachers still were not required to be able to read. In the 1950s this teacher would have been lynched for having a banned book, sharing it with students and stirring unrest among the unwashed.

I grew up in MS and was educated in MS during the 50's; still visit family there. Have traveled extensively throughout USA (and other countries) and have never once felt slighted because of that education. I saw the pick handles by retail store doors awaiting the "Freedom Marchers" during the 60's. MS had and has a horrible reputation (in some cases deserved) but for the most part I'd take MS over any state in the north east quarter of USA. Maybe I have selective memory but I don't recall ANY teacher lynching or few, if any, unpunished lynching of any persons. Your post is appreciated. It helps keep like minded individuals out of MS allowing those who know the state to enjoy its many wonderful attributes.
prodemco, sorry for the Mississippi poke.
I grew up in rural farming Michigan. I will not brag at all about the education in Grand Blanc at that time [graduated in 1954]. I was sure that with all the training in diagraming sentences that there would be a demand for that sk**l. Oops, I found out quickly what F stood for when called on in college to write an essay; no diagraming required.
You and I both as did many others had to and did self educate to survive in the real and competitive world. In Michigan, how much education did one need to run a punch press? Not much. In GM at 17 and out at 55 good retirement and all those "Socialist Things" that the Democrats talk about... Medical/dental care, living wage etc. I grew up in a socialist state... long gone.
We would go South to visit relatives in Arkansas and the rural school I attended was head and shoulders above the ones my cousins attended in Arkansas. The world has changed greatly, and it was unfair of me to take a poke at Mississippi.
HOWEVER: "Mississippi ranked 48th overall, above only Alabama (49) and Louisiana (50).

If you could just fix your healthcare system. I used to work with a physician in an emergency room that was located in a small public hospital north of Jackson. It was so broke that the nurses used to bring food in to serve the patients. It averages about 80% nonWhite inpatient population. Ten miles away in Jackson, another public hospital, had everything needed in a hospital, good equipment, great staff and good meals. It average about 95% Caucasian inpatient population.
Unless an emergency, patients from black hospital could not go to white hospital because you could only be admitted by your physician and white physicians did not have black patients.
This was about ten years ago so maybe have changed.

Re: southern education. It pains me to agree with any slur directed at the south, but as a resident of the capitol city of the state of Alabama I have to concur with the assessment of the quality of public education in my state. Our local schools have had their accreditation suspended by the state department of education and have only been allowed to operate under the supervision of their employees. These 'advisers' are armed with a massive list of required improvements and a court order for them to be carried out.
The w****s don't care because the only white kids in the public schools these days are those whose parents cannot afford to send them to one of the dozens of private schools in the city. So the same ineffective, unconcerned misfits keep getting elected to the school board by the same 59% majority v****g along racial lines. This does a terrible disservice to those condemned to attend public schools as well as the parents who sacrifice in other ways to keep their children in places where a quality education is available and a degree of discipline is enforced.
I agree with someone who commented earlier that being a whiz at diagramming sentences is no pr********n for entering the work force, but to diagram a sentence, one must first be able to read it. The local high schools hand out certificates of attendance to those who attend school for 12 years without being expelled. I suppose that is an accomplishment. The few who can pass state educational development tests and have actually learned to read, write and speak English get and actual diploma.
Hey Anarchism sounds pretty good lol
