Interesting range of gear. Most as expected, but a few surprises...

I had the same camera as used in photo #14. Really liked the camera and used it for over 20 years.

Very Interesting pics and the history behind them. Thanks for sharing. I wanted to see more info on the lenses used. Some were mentioned. Many were not. It surprised me the narrative left out the infamous Nikkor 105 mm lens used on the Afghan girl. Years later I bought a used one after learning that lens was used for the magazine cover shot. Incredibly sharp Ai portrait lens. Great color too.

Narrowing it down to 20 must have been incredibly hard, and choosing that number is somewhat arbitrary, but here's the count by manufacturer, for those interested....

Nikon 5
Leica 4
Graphic / Graflex 4
Hasselblad 2
Exakta 1
Petri 1
Fuji 1
Minolta 1
Zeiss 1

Considering that the dates for Leica and Graphic range from the 30s to the 60s, the Nikon numbers are impressive. And a Petri 7? Weegee was right - F8 and Be There.

I enjoyed the article. I noticed that the picture of the Speed Graphic they used for some of the pictures had a Linhof film holder next to the camera. I doubt that U.S. photographers would have been using German film holders during WWII.

Interesting photos to say the least. 20 pics using some pretty good cameras...But - the series missed one of the best: the "earth rise" photo by John Glenn(?) while orbiting earth. Guess what camera he used? An ANSCO (model unknown) modified for left handed shooting. Just goes to show you: it ain't the camera, it's the photographer.
