Hello community,

I am wondering which lenses are the competition to the Sony G master 100 400?.

Do you mean one lens (10-400) or two lenses, 100 and 400?

To the best of my knowledge, there are no other native FE mount lenses in that range.
The new 200-600 FE is a G (not G master). I don't think any of the third party lens manufacturers make an FE in that range.
Unless you are willing to use an adapter on an A-mount lens, the 70-400 G comes to mind, I don't think you will find anything and I doubt that any of the A-mounts would match the IQ of the 100-400 FE.
I could be wrong of course.

Excellent review. However, having used both, I think that any IQ difference between an a-70-400 and the e-100-400 are pretty hard or even impossible to perceive.

When the OP says "competition" it raises the question of criteria. Assuming that it must work on an e-mount Sony..
Price?
Weight?
Physical size?
Maximum and minimum focal lengths?
AF performance?
Native vs. adapter? If adapter, must it be "smart" (i.e. control aperture)
IQ?
Maximum aperture?
Ability to use tele-extender?
In-lens stabilization? (Some Sony models don't need that)

For example, is a Sigma 150-600 (various models) part of the set to be considered?

Good points. I agree the A-70-400 is an excellent lens, owned one it the past.

No competition, as image quality is more a product of photographic KNOWLEDGE than lens construction.
Besides, everyone knows that the Canon 100-400 II blows it away.

The new Sony 200 -600mm is the only real competion because every third party lens has to be used with an adapter. Nikon lenses don't enter into the discussion as there is no effective adapter, so you are left with the Canon 100 - 400mm via a Sigma MC11 adapter, or the Sigma/Tamron 150 - 600mm, again via a Sigma MC11 adapter or the Sigma/Tamron 100 - 400mm lenses, with a Sigma MC11 adapter. There are other Canon to Sony adapters, but from what I gather, the MC11 is the best adapter currently available. Additionally, it is doubtfulthat any of the above are optically on a par with the Sony 100 - 400mm G Master. The G Master is also very lightweight and has a brilliant close focusing distance.

Funnily enough, I part exchanged my Sony 100 - 400mm G Master + SEL20TC for a Sony 200 - 600,, + SEL14TC 3 days ago. I have taken a few images with it but have not yet had the chance to process the RAW files. Though optically superior and lighter in weight, changing to a 200 - 600mm was the right thing to do for me. Nevertheless, the 100 - 400mm G Master is a stunningly brilliant lens and I will miss it to a degree. I have owned a Canon 100 - 400mm f4.5/5.6L IS II and it did not come close to the G Master.

This is really great and straight forward information. I know you mentioned the use of the mc11 adapter with canon lenses. I am wondering if all the fictions would still work with the adapter?. Otherwise, I better start saving my money right now for the G master. Thank you, for helping me learned more about the sony lenses.

I've used the Metabones III & IV as well as Sigma's MC-11. The MC-11 works very well with every Canon lens I own. The Metabones IV is close but not quite there. The III is not in the same league as either!

However, if you want all Sony camera functions with a lens, go with a Sony FE lens.
