Setting Rear Curtain Sync on Canon 5d Mark IV

I'm trying to learn more about flash photography and want to set my camera to 2nd curtain sync, but I can't figure out how to do it. There's probably something real obvious that I'm missing, and I've tried googling it, but I'm not finding the answer I need. When I go into my flash settings, my only choices seem to be 1st curtain sync and high speed sync. I understand the difference between 1st and 2nd curtain sync, but just can't figure out how to set the camera. I'd sure appreciate it if someone could help.

Wouldn't that be covered on page 293 of the EOS 5DIV manual and / or a setting on the flash?

Thanks, Paul. I actually have page 293 bookmarked in my manual. My problem is, the illustration they show at the top of the page is not what I see on my camera. I'm not getting the option to set it to 2nd curtain sync. I'm only getting the option to choose 1st curtain or high speed. I'm feeling pretty dumb right now, but I'm not sure how to get the option to choose 2nd curtain. I took a pic of my screen and will attach it to this....hopefully.

I have a 5D3 - so the 4 might be different. On the 5D3, you can only use rear-curtain sync when the (Canon) flash is attached to the camera. If you remote the flash - with a ST3, you can no longer get rear-curtain sync. That info is hidden in some footnote in my manual.

Very frustrating issue. I would have hoped they fixed it on the 4, or on the next EOS version to come.
I'd be interested if someone has a workaround.

FYI ... that's the purpose of the 'watch' link in the upper left of the first post of any thread ...

I agree with you, Dan...very frustrating. I do have my flash (Canon) attached and turned on.

And when you checked the manual for the flash, what were its instructions? My 580EX / 580EX II has the setting described on page 26. If still not resolved, you might try Canon's 800 number, listed on the support section of their website, assuming the flash is also a Canon product.

Just curious, Blurry. Have you tried setting your 5d iv camera to rear curtain sync? If so, does your camera display the same image that is on page 293?

I have the Canon 600EXII-RT. It discusses Rear curtain sync on pg. 32. It says it doesn't work during wireless flash photography, so I made sure my wireless is off and the flash is set to Master. When I press function button 4 to sync, I still only get high speed as an option. I guess I'll just give Canon a call. I figured it was something simple I was missing when reading the manual. Thanks for trying to help.

Just for fun - I just went through the exercise with my 5D3 again. I am using a Canon 600EXll RT.
The only way to get rear-curtain sync is to have the flash mounted on the camera with wireless off. When I turn wireless on - the rear curtain sync option goes away. When I try using my ST-3, I can't get the 2nd curtain sync menu either - as it is wireless. Tried Manual vs. AV, different sync speeds - no differences.

I had researched this about 5 years ago - and found that this was what others saw as well. I don't remember if I ever called Canon on this. You are correct that the note I saw was on page 32 of the 600EXll RT manual: Second curtain sync not available with wireless flash photography.

Has anyone found a good work-around?

Dan

No, and I did not mean to be a smart ass, I just think that to few people use their manuals, obviously you have consulted your manual. I use flash in macro and sometimes in interiors, have not done blurred motion which is what I think second shutter sync is mostly used for.

No worries! I not only started with my manual (and got stuck when I wasn't seeing the same options as the manual showed), but I tried google searches, as well. I've learned so much from the folks on this site over the past 3-4 years, and I was hoping someone might be able to point out what I was missing. I just posted the question on a facebook page for users of this camera, so I'm hoping maybe someone might be able to help. I'll call Canon, if I don't get it figured out on my own (with the help of my friends)!

I'll use first curtain sync most often, but I'd like to experiment with some creative stuff. That's the only way I learn! :)

Thanks,
Patty

Dan, I noticed that about the wireless, too. So, you are able to get rear curtain sync on your 5D III, though. Right? I just can't help but feel I'm missing something simple, here! lol
