They certainly aren't.

I had one once try to convince me that my Canon Rebel did burst by frame grabbing from video - this was a camera that didn't even do basic video.

You are correct, but they are welcome by competent photographers. Just another tool to the tool belt.

Well, this camera from Sony may not be suited for an “everyday” walk about camera, but for certain jobs, it will likely be a great tool.

The same goes for Amazon's phone people. You can't expect them to be experts on every product in every field that Amazon carries.

A special tool to be included as part of your tool box.

Will their be a new Nikon mirrorless with the 61MP sensor in it? Of course.

It has been said that Nikon themselves produced some, an unknown percentage, of the sensors in their D3, which was groundbreaking in it's day and is still superior in certain situations. This shouldn't come as a surprise, as Nikon and Sony have had a longstanding business relationship, as Nikon builds many of the robotic machines that Sony uses to fab sensors, and Nikon uses Sony sensors in many of their cameras. It wouldn't surprise me to find that Nikon has a small production line to test sensor building robots.

Hiya ladies & gentlemen,

I have absolutely NO connection to Sony Corp. other than as a Customer of their products, starting with my purchase of a Sony reel to reel tape recorder in 1964 at the Northern Greenland Air Base in Thule, Greenland, as an American G.I.!

This many years later, I've purchased two Sony Digital Cameras, in recent years.

To my surprise, I learned yesterday in an Email from Sony they have announced their NEW Digital Camera Upgrade of the A7R series of cameras. They've surpassed their A7R III with their announcement of their Brand New A7R IV ((( 61 Megapixel ))) digital camera. Pull up B&H Photo.com's PAGE on the Sony A7R IV and click on the MORE INFO computer prompt about the A7R IV to read about the INCREASED ADVANTAGES of this brand new A7R series camera over the previous TWO! It is beyond description in so few words.

I was gobsmacked, to put it bluntly! I thought it would take them at least TWO more years to put their 2017 Award Winning A7R III into the dust-bin of has-beens! But apparently NOT!

Thankfully, their new camera will STILL WORK with the older lenses from the A7R II and their A7R III, cameras, because all three of them are FULL FRAME SENSOR CAMERAS! Lenses from Crop Sensor cameras do not work properly with FULL FRAME SENSOR cameras.

I quit dealing with Amazon because of their INFERIOR STAFF members who cannot carry on a credible conversation about basically ANY QUESTIONS or ISSUES regarding products. While I am 'sure' they wish to, they cannot .... simply because they do NOT understand basic American English or our normal line of thought!

Having said that, I freely admit ... I am an EX-Army Intelligence Linguist who worked Two Tours against the Russians in Europe. I 'KNOW' about communicating in a Foreign Language!

And I also KNOW about how important it IS for those who attempt to speak in a language they have little to now basic skills in their NEW language they are attempting to use!

I switched to B&H Photo dot com for ALL my Camera needs and questions regarding sales, buys and Technical Questions about what will and won't work with specific camera issues, I want to solve.

I cannot begin to adequately explain how pleased I am to have found B&H photo! I have been a resident of TEXAS since 1957 and still live there. Needless to say, having found a New York City source for my camera needs is BEYOND my scope of experience. Considering my past experience in camera technical needs!

Other than being a happy customer of B&H camera, I have NO connection, let alone FINANCIAL connection to B&H Camera with the exception of BUYING 'stuff' from them!

I've found that John P. in their Email Section at johnp@ghphoto.com is 'invaluable' in dealing with Technical Questions in regards to Digital Cameras. He is an old fart like me. I am however his ELDER! For a 'kid' (joking) he isn't half bad! ;-)

note: I found out after calling B&H Photo yesterday (after receiving Sony's Email regarding their NEW A7R series camera) that I can SELL B&H photo my A7R III and use the Trade In amount as a down-payment on my NEW A7R IV when it debuts in September!

YOU also CAN TRADE IN OLDER CAMERAS as a down payment on the sensational A7R IV digital camera with 61 megapixels photos - along with a VAST AMOUNT of INTERNAL UPGRADES like its NEWLY ENGINEERED BODY that is their "most environmentally secure/sealed digital cameras they produce! Resistant to rain & dust better than any of their other cameras.

B&H is selling this camera for $3,500.00, for the Body Only. If you ALREADY have a Sony A7R series camera, ALL your lenses will WORK with this camera. (that was my major question)

And you can INQUIRE from their Trade-In Dept. as to how much you can get for your OLDER Digital Cameras as Trade-Ins for this new camera purchase.

IF you do NOT ask, you won't know.

Scooter,

PS: like I said go to B&H photo and download their article about this camera and read all the specs about what has been upgraded from the older A7R series of cameras, to realize WHAT A GREAT DEAL IT IS!
Hiya ladies & gentlemen, br br I have absolut... (show quote)

In Texas and no mention of Precision Camera in Austin? They have a Sony expert on staff. They provide the best trade value. I'm a Sony fanboy but see no need to upgrade from my a7iii or a7riii. The new camera photo will eat up to much space on my computer and I'm not a pro. Photography is totally a hobby. I will be interest in your review and photos with the new camera.

I do most of my photo stuff acquisition locally, live, warm-blooded, breathing human “person”. Sure a state as big as Texas has a real camera store somewhere.

The best one is Precision Camera in Austin. I used to go there until Camera Exchange in San Antonio step up their game with Sony cameras. Ft Worth has camera store they are activate online. Haven't been there. There is a Camera Exchange in Houston and have not visited.

I agree that I want to look someone in the eye when I buy.

I am a Sony owner of many cameras. The most wierd announcement I read a couple of days ago was Sony announced a new version of the popular mini camera RX100.
It’s 7th version. I own version 4 great camera. But now 7 is going to be a sort of pro camera with the features of Sony’s upscale A9?. Very strange. I hope I got the article right!

The last camera I purchased in a camera store was in 1995.

How fast has your Sony I, II and now III become obsolete?
Yesterday's news.

Obsolescence doesn't seem to affect you or myself. You're using a 7D and I a 5DIII. Cameras do not stop taking great pictures when replaced with a new model. I'm looking for Eye Autofocus and AF points that spread much wider across the frame to ensure tack sharp eye shots at F1.4. Sony has that system working well after 3 generations. I'm grateful they keep perfecting that system and continue to keep their cycles short. As an environmental portrait enthusiast, Canon has nothing to compete presently. Focus and recompose doesn't work well with longer focal lengths and shallow DOF with AF points that don't fill the frame.

Eye Autofocus allows you to concentrate on your composition and posing workflow. I'm not switching but I admire what Sony has done. We'll see what Canon does but their conservative nature with very long product cycles, I feel I'm missing certain features that I could definitely use.

Canon glass is excellent along with their robust bodies similar to Nikon.

There is no magic bullet but some seem to fit the gun better than others.

it's nice being able to salivate over new things, but even when they are better all of us don't need them.

Sony and Nikon have a long-standing relationship with Nikon using Sony sensors in many of their top cameras over the years. It is unusual that Sony will so quickly sell Nikon their new sensor from the A7RIV, but it makes sense if you examine it. Nikon has suffered the most financially in the FF camera market and needs a boost to stay competitive. Most pros and reviewers agree the Z-cameras are a better release than the Canon EOS R cameras, both in still and video performance. But they just aren't selling. The Sony A7III alone is selling twice the cameras than the four Nikon Z6, Z7, Canon EOS R and EOS RP all combined. I am not making this up, the latest sales figures have been released .

Sony doesn't want Nikon to fail, they are good business partners and are a good bulwark against Canon sales. So Sony will sell Nikon BOTH the A7RIV 61mp sensor for a Z8 AND sell Nikon the previously exclusive stacked sensor from the class-leading A9 so Nikon can have a top sports mirrorless camera for the Olympics. Sony will introduce a new upgraded A9II to stay a step ahead of the pack.

Canon has a rumored 70mp camera coming out themselves, but Canon has lot of catching up to do with autofocus systems, video capture crops , actual frame rates with full AF-C, and many more problems and crippling omissions that have hurt their EOS R and EOS RP sales.

Expect Sony and Nikon to work hand in hand sharing many sensors and tech going forward. It is good business in this shrinking camera market for them to team up this way. Cheers
