For the past few weeks I have been trying to figure out why my Sigma 24-70 has been having focus problems. It's about six years old. Then last week I noticed the reason why, the main body is cracking about 1/3 the way around, right above the lens mount. This has been one of my most used lens and I don't know what I did to cause the damage.
It's off to Sigma for repair, hopefully it's is repairable and won't cost more than it's worth. I had been thinking about selling it toward the cost of the Canon 24-105mm, or the 17-40mm.
Oh well, life happens.
Are you not covered by insurance?
My 18-200mm took a knock against a wall and the zoom ring started sticking. Nikon wanted nearly as much as a new lens cost to fix it, so in went the insurance claim. Small excess to pay, then nice shiny new lens.
I hadn't thought about insurance, I don't have specific insurance for my camera gear but I should look into that. I don't know if my home owners insurance covers this or not. I wouldn't think something like this would be covered, but who knows.
Thanks for the info, I will look into it.

I'm pretty sure you can get specific riders on your policy for just about anything - - I know I've seen other posts about specific insurance to cover theft and breakage - with just about any limits, deductibles, replacement value vs pro-rated, that you can imagine.

I don't know how it works in USA, but here camera insurance is normally automatically covered in Household insurance, as are a number of other things. The only rider is that I have to declare anything over GBP1,000 in value, although it doesn't seem to affect the premium. I pay a little extra and get 'new for old' which does away with the perennial arguments over depreciation and 'fair wear and tear'.
When I was burgled a few years ago my Fuji Finepix S2Pro was replaced with a D700 and my 25-year old Manfrotto with a 055XProB etc. I still had to argue that a 'point 'n shoot' compact was not really a suitable replacement for the S2Pro and similar 'suggestions', but I got there in the end.
